Is your little girl a princess? Why not give her the Disney princess room of her dreams! While decorating for children may seem like an overwhelming task, a theme room is not as difficult to create as it seems. When decorating any room one must decide not only the aesthetic sense of the room but also the functionality.
Children’s rooms are most ideally multi purpose. Creating a Disney princess dream room that is not only pleasing to the eye but enjoyable to use can be fun and exciting. The first thing to consider when designing a Disney princess theme room is which princess does your darling want to be? This decision impacts the entire design of the room. Each princess has her own colors, style and personality. Which one suits your child best?
A good place to start would be her favorite character or color. For example if your little girl loves blue or green, then the logical choice would be a Little Mermaid room, rich in deep sea blues, turquoise and light greens. If she’s pretty much a Disney princess fanatic (as most little girls tend to be) then a cascade of colors is in order. Choose the main color of the room and accent accordingly.
Choosing the wall dressing can be a bit difficult. Painting the entire room one color can accent the main design, though paint does have the drawback that once its on, it may have to be replaced later, not only due to wear and tear a child may give it, but also the child’s taste may change as they age. If choosing wall paper, consider the stick and peel kind. This easily installs over a clean painted wall and comes off with little effort if the design is later changed. Any type of wall paper should be easily washable. Wall stickers, while pretty and easily changed, may pose a threat to little mouths and fingers as children enjoy peeling and placing stickers over and over again. Window dressings can be bought to match or offset the main colors of the room. Neutral, solid colors work well and can be used over and over again as your child’s tastes change. Disney patterned style window dressings can also be found at nearly every retail outlet.
Consider the space and functionality of the room in the design. Children tend to need lots of storage space as well as large open areas to let their imaginations roam. Choosing large pieces of furniture may overwhelm the room. The largest piece to consider is of course, the bed. When making over a room for a Disney princess theme, a must is the canopy bed. Most any style of bed can be converted to a canopy bed with several options for the canopy. A complete over the bed canopy may not be the best choice as children tend to turn these into tents or pull them down over time. A good idea is a partial wall canopy that spreads out over the headboard or along the wall and can be pulled back to give a pleasing look. This can be ordered or made at home and you don’t have to run out and buy an expensive poster bed for the canopy. Parents can find and compare styles on various web sites or at department stores and decide which one would work best.
Storage is essential for a child’s room. Ideally a wardrobe style dresser fits quite well into the Disney princess theme. If not bought brand new, an older one can be bought at a thrift store and refurbished to suit the design scheme of the room with a little staining or painting. If the wardrobe is not an option, consider using a simple stand alone dresser with a fashionable mirror. Closet doors can also be painted over or redone with tacky paper to resemble a wardrobe entrance. A child size vanity is always pleasing to the young princess. One with several drawers to place their valuables and a chair for playing dress up fits nicely into the theme. Storage drawers such as bins and cubicles can be bought in several colors or painted to suit the overall color of the room as well as shelving units. Parents can also paint stencils of Disney characters onto the storage containers. Another nice choice for storage is an old fashioned wooden toy box with a seat top. Cover the top with regal colored pillows of rich purples and reds to give the room a majestic look. Hutches and bookcases are easily added to the theme with a little paint. A corner desk is quite useful for storage as well as functional for study. Buy with the theme color in mind or paint to match.
Accessories are just as important for the overall theme. Bedding should match the princess theme. Satin style comforters and bed ruffles accent the bed. Bedding sets with a Disney princess design are readily available at any retail outlet. A few Disney themed throw pillows add personality to the bed. Add a few stuffed Disney characters for a nice touch. A fancy wall mirror for viewing their favorite dress up gown in is always a pleaser for young debutantes and be hung on the back of the room door to save space.
Other accessories such as a small play table and chair set can be bought with the Disney princess designs on them or one they already have can be converted with a few stencils and some paint. A small table lamp can be bought or converted with some beads, glue and glitter. Nicely framed prints also add a nice touch to any room. Remember to save a spot for your princess’s own favorite works of art. If you want to go all out, faux chandelier light fixtures are reasonably cheap at places like Home Depot or other hardware stores and come with easy to install instructions. Glow in the dark mobiles and wall stickers can add a magical touch to bedtime, with moons, stars and other fancy shapes. Light switches and outlets can be easily replaced with Disney style covers or even fancy gold ones for a final touch.
Also, consider that just about any fancy gadget you can think of comes already marketed for Disney fans. Televisions, DVD players and even computer monitors come already designed with the younger generation in mind. If you want to add any of these to your child’s room, check with any toy outlet for a full complement of Disney character technology to add to the room. Above all, try to keep it simple and versatile. Children tend to be quite fickle and often change their personal style from one day to the next. Buy items that are easily replaced or converted so that as they age it will be easy to change the style of their room with their personal tastes.
