Packing your own healthy vacation snacks is the easy route to go, but you may find yourself browsing the aisles of the gas station looking for something to satisfy your hunger. Most food in a convenience store is junk food full of fat, calories and sugar. But you can find some healthy options to curb your hunger while on vacation.
Don’t wait until you are starving to stop for a snack at the gas station. You’ll likely reach for the first thing that grabs your attention and it most likely won’t be very healthy. Stock up on a few snacks before you get too hungry. You’ll have some healthy options available in the car.
Choose Fresh Fruit
While still full of candy, chips and other unhealthy foods, most convenience stores are expanding their offerings to include some healthier options. Fresh fruit is one option that is often available at gas stations. You will likely find only a limited selection — usually apples, bananas and maybe oranges. But at least you know the fruit is nutritious.
Head to the salty snack aisle for some healthy options. Nuts are one of the healthiest options when it comes to salty snacks. They are high in fat, but it’s a better fat than fried chips. Watch the sodium content and sugar content of flavored nuts. Pretzels or baked chips are other salty snacks that you can be healthier than some other options. Even some whole grain crackers might be an option.
Head to the cooler section of the gas station to look for healthy dairy options. String cheese is often a choice. Some gas stations might offer low-fat yogurt.
Don’t lose your healthy flow when you reach for a beverage at the gas station. Soda, smoothies and juices are often full of sugar and calories. Instead, opt for water or unsweetened tea. If you want something sweet, stick to 100 percent fruit juices.
