Feeling the weight pile on as you sit at your desk? Don’t let work derail your healthy habits. There are many simple ways to burn calories while at work. Find simple ways to move more while handling your business at work.
Burn Before Work
Instead of driving to work, ride your bike or walk. You’ll kick off your day with a good calorie deficit. Don’t live close enough to the office? Drive part way, park and hoof it the rest of the way. Or take public transportation part of the way and get off at a stop a mile or two from work. By starting off your day in an active way, you might be more motivated to stay active throughout the day.
You may feel like hiding out in your office, but that won’t burn many calories. Get up from your desk as much as you can. Instead of calling coworkers to ask a question or sending an email, get up and go talk to them in person. You burn calories and may get your issue resolved faster. It’s usually easier to have a discussion in person than through messages. Find other excuses to get up from your desk. Don’t browse the Internet on your break. Get up and move around the office.
Exercise at Your Desk
In addition to walking around the office more, you can do some simple exercises right in your office. Do squats while holding onto your chair. Do crunches on your office floor. It doesn’t take a lot of room to do a lot of simple exercises.
Use Breaks for Workouts
Instead of just sitting around during your breaks, use them as your workout. If you get an hour long lunch, you’ll still have time to exercise and eat before you have to clock back in. If your office has a gym, you’re all set. If not, change into some comfortable clothes and go for a walk in the neighborhood around the office. You can freshen up with a washcloth in the bathroom if no shower is available. Put on some new deodorant and a spritz of perfume and you’re set to finish your day.
Make the Most of Physical Labor
If your job involves physical labor, push yourself a little harder while you do it to burn extra calories. Squat deeper when you bend down to pick up something. Walk faster when you move from one area of the job to another. These little changes in your pacing can boost your calorie burn at the office.
