When piecing together an art portfolio, where you do even begin?
1. Create a few breadth pieces.
Breadth pieces show your understanding and ability to apply the principles and elements of art. In order for this to be effective, you should include several differing techniques and mediums. Suggestions for beginning this part of your collection is to create many self portraits in the style of some art masters. For example: set a small mirror in front of your work area, find a picture of Vincent van Gogh’s portrait work as an example of his style, and draw yourself in the likeness of his work. This will work well with any artist of your choice.
Another excellent exercise that will be a fabulous addition to your portfolio is to copy master’s works. I know it must sound like cheating, but most sophisticated art schools don’t allow students to continue their studies until they can successfully accomplish this. So it’s actually great practice, and it will make you more confident in your own style in the end.
Color study is among the best additions you could possible make to your work, due to the fact that so much can be created and emphasized with it. Mixing your own paint and inventing your own colors is key. Try your best to avoid using paint straight out of a bottle or tube. Be adventurous! The first color study piece that is an absolute essential is to draw the same image on the same page in two separate boxes. Using a maximum of 5 colors, paint the two drawings only making one of the colors you paint with different between the two pieces. In order to ensure success choose your shapes and colors wisely. Silhouettes work well with this exercise, and avoid using tints of colors. Next in Color study is some sort of shade/tint work. Also dealing with perspective and depth, gradually make the objects further away darker and slowly lighter as they move into the foreground. Or vice versa, if you wish. This can be accomplished using tints of one color to show understanding, and as well as with differing colors.
Last, but not least in the breadth building category is painting music. That’s right, you heard me! Painting music. It may seem a bit obscure, but it’s truly a good for skill building. As complicated as it sounds, all you really have to do is pick two vastly differing genres of music, and paint according to the feelings they invoke within you. Transform your feelings into scenes, patterns or simply anything that comes to mind when you hear these particular kinds of tunes. An example would be painting country music, and dubstep. For country, you might paint a nice, warm sunset or a bonfire under a star-filled night. Dubstep might be represented by painting vibrating water to show the heavy bass-line.
2. Concentrate on One Central Theme in a Series of Your Works
What I mean by this is simple. After you build up skill and understanding, put it to use in your own style concerning your own subjects. This part of your portfolio is free range! Say you want to paint landscapes. This is the area of your work where you would deeply study subjects or a central purpose of your choice. So you would paint the same landscape at different times of the day, in different weather conditions, during different events, using different styles and mediums.
3. Throw in a Couple Works With Some Texture!
What do I mean by texture, you might ask? I mean toss in some collages made from printed media, found objects, or pretty much anything you can get your hands on. This demonstrated your ability to think outside the box and take an original image, them recreate it with something other than typical art supplies. For better material and images to work off of, create original sketches, work from actual physical photos or images and please, please avoid working off of computers or phones. The images lose some of their likeness when you do, thus affecting your work.
Follow these few steps, and you’ll have a powerful portfolio in no time.
Never forget to stay creative, and never forget to use your imagination. That’s the true key to meaningful art, which these steps can dramatically enhance.
