Lip balm is available in just about every flavor imaginable, but most do not contain natural ingredients. They are typically comprised of various forms of wax along with artificial colors and long list of unrecognizable components. It is best to whip up homemade varieties. You will know exactly what they contain, and they can be made in various delicious mint flavors. Give this option a try, and transform some of the most soothing ingredients into a treat for your lips.
For homemade all-natural mint lip balm you will need 4 tablespoons of refined shea butter, 4 tablespoons of cosmetic grade beeswax, 4 tablespoons of pure coconut oil and peppermint or spearmint essential oil. For hygienic reasons, it is important to use cosmetic grade and/or food grade products when making lip balm or anything else used on or around the mouth. You will also need a small container with a tight-fitting lid for mixing and storing the homemade lip balm. If desired, it can be split up into smaller containers.
Begin by thoroughly mixing the beeswax and shea butter to create a creamy consistency. Mix in the coconut oil, and add the mint essential oil just a few drops at a time until achieving the desired intensity of fragrance and flavor. If the mixture seems to thin, add more beeswax or shea butter ½ of a teaspoon at a time. If it is too thick, add more coconut oil a few drops at a time. The formula can be easily changed to meet your needs as well as your personal preferences. It will be shinier when more coconut oil is used, but it can be glitzier than ever with another simple addition.
If you love sparkling lip balm, you can create a homemade version that is even better than anything available in stores. Buy cosmetic grade glitter, and add it a little at a time to the shea butter, beeswax and coconut oil mixture. It can be used to add color and incredible shine. Consider starting out with very fine opalescent glitter. It will coordinate with any outfit, and it will look phenomenal on your lips. It is the perfect accompaniment to mint lip balm, especially the homemade variety.
