Job interviews can be stressful, nerve-wracking and not exactly something you look forward to. However, with preparation and practice, you will be more likely to give a great first impression. If you have an upcoming fast food job interview, try to relax. The statistics are in your favor, even if you stumble on the questions.
More than likely the supervisor will say, “So, tell me about yourself!” Try to prepare a short, but informative answer. These sample answers might help you brainstorm your response. These are great for interviews at Subway, Starbucks, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, McDonald’s, Sonic and other fast food restaurants.
Remember, you do not have to tell the employer your marital status. It is illegal for them to ask. You also do not have to share that you are pregnant, or have children.
Sample Answer if You Have Not Had a Job in Awhile
“I am 33 years old, and just recently moved to Seattle. I enjoy running and recently ran my first 5k. I love to socialize, and am a proud aunt to my nieces and nephews. I love to be around people, and I’ve been told I’m a great friend. I have a flexible schedule and can work anytime.”
Sample Answer if You Are in High School
“I’m a junior at Coronado High School. I’m active in the student council, band, and Key Club. I’m not much into competitive sports, but I do enjoy hiking and camping. I have two younger brothers, who I babysit for occasionally. I’m looking forward to finding my first job.”
Sample Answer if You Are in College
“I’m a freshman at Lipscomb University. I’m originally from Alabama, and was active in sports and band in high school. I’m a biology major, and I’m active in my church. I enjoy meeting new people and I love eating at Pizza Hut, so I’m sure I’d enjoy working here!”
Sample Answer if You Currently Have a Fast Food Job
“I’m 21, and I like to cook and play with my nephews, through preferably not at the same time! As you know from my application, I currently work at Taco-Bell. I enjoy being a part of the team there, however I have recently moved to the Westwind Apartments on 82nd street. I would like a job that is closer to my home. I have a flexible schedule and am happy to work anytime.”
Sample Answer if You’ve Recently Got Out of Prison
“I’m 53, and eager to find a job. I consider myself to be very patient, and I can learn new things easily. I’ve been told I’m a good listener, and a good friend. I like to cook, read, and go to church. As you know there is a big gap in my work history. I want to be completely honest, I served time in prison for a non-violent crime. I became a Christian, and I am a new person. I miss having a job and am ready to get back to work.”
(Note: Most applications will ask if you have been charged with a felony, so it’s great to just be completely honest. It might take several interviews before you find a job, however, many fast food restaurants will hire people with a criminal history.)
These are a few sample answers on how to respond to “Tell me about yourself!” Always, be truthful. Practice the answer with a friend. If you don’t have someone, ask on an online message board.
