Timing may not be everything. However, when it comes to article writing, it’s a pretty big something. Neglecting the timing of your article could mean the loss of hundreds of dollars in page views. Online writing success has always been about filling an informational need. The more people who need your article at the time you write it, the better. Here’s some examples of how timing impacts article success.
Beating out the competition.
We all know that the first person reporting news has a huge advantage. Everyone wants to be the first to break a story when people are hungry for news. What about those of us who don’t write news or celebrity gossip? How do we take advantage of popular trends? Well, believe it or not, there are other things happening to people around the world that evergreen writers can write about.
Timing evergreen articles.
First of all, if you don’t know, an evergreen article is one that gets continual page views over time, rather than just earning page views when a story breaks. Good timing can allow writers to make evergreen articles both trending and long term successful.
For instance, a few years back, there was a terrible bed-bug epidemic, followed by a stink bug invasion. I wrote about recognizing both in separate articles that did quite well initially. Not only that, since I timed them well, those articles were indexed on the first page of Google search. Now, whenever there is an outbreak, they get a whole new influx of views.
So, how do we know what stories are popular? We look for trends on major news sites like Yahoo! and Google. That’s obvious. We also pay attention to what’s being talked about on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. We listen to the woes of our friends and the whining of our enemies. All that tells us it’s a good time to write about a certain subject.
Resurrecting old content.
I have mentioned this in other articles. However, it’s quite applicable to this article. When a trending question can be answered by an older article you’ve already written, it’s time to promote that article. You might also like to revise it to fit the situation, add a new angle or simply write a new article on the same subject, using it for reference. These articles are quite simple to write, since you’re already familiar with the topic.
We all know the timing of holiday articles is crucial. When should you publish them? The best time to write holiday articles is about a month prior to the holiday. The best time to publish them is about two weeks prior to the holiday. Don’t forget, you have tons of holiday articles in your queue. Promote them at about that same time. Doing so gives you a page view boost without further writing.
The perfect storm
Everyone loves hitting it big time with an article. How do you do it? In my experience, it takes a bit of a perfect storm. The article has to fill a need. It has to reveal unique information. It also has to contain enough evergreen information to be popular in the long run. Creating the perfect storm using timing, new facts and longevity and having that article pay your bills forever, is probably the greatest feeling any online writer will ever have.
