Before starting the Medifast 5&1 Plan in September, losing weight seemed hopeless. My stubborn pounds seemed permanently stuck to my expanding middle-aged middle. I tried modifying what I ate and how much I exercised, but the scale wouldn’t budge.
I finally hit bottom after a shopping trip fail last fall when I could not find a dress for a job interview. I decided to try one more diet and selected Medifast, because I knew a few people who had lost weight safely and rapidly on the program.
Three months later, everyone around me if my New Year’s resolution was to lose weight. But not me. I was 30 pounds lighter, two sizes smaller and had a healthy BMI of 24. It may have been the beginning of winter, but I was ready to hit the mall and shop for bathing suits.
Though its TV commercial insists, “It’s not a miracle; it’s Medifast,” the company’s weight loss program turned out to be the closest thing to divine intervention of any diet I’ve ever tried. And there have been many. From Weight Watchers to South Beach, I’m a veteran of the diet wars and can count points and carbs with the best of them.
So why did Medifast work so well for me when other diets failed?
Medifast Has Rigid Rules
The Medifast diet is very strict. You must eat five of the company’s replacement meals and one Lean & Green meal (a mega serving of lean protein and low-glycemic vegetables) each day. Not having to make a lot of decisions made it easier for me to stay on plan.
Medifast is Convenient
All of the Medifast replacement meals are either ready to eat or require minimal prep. I could stash a few bars or puffs in my purse and didn’t have to devote my weekends to shopping and cooking. Even the Lean & Green meal could be a supermarket salad with extra chicken.
I Was Never Hungry on Medifast
Eating six times a day kept my hunger pangs away. Just knowing that another meal was around the corner kept me from eating forbidden foods.
Ketosis Kept Me from Cheating
Because Medifast works by putting the body in a mild state of ketosis, I was rarely tempted to cheat. A couple of cookies could kick me out of fat-burning mode and stall my weight loss for three days.
My Free Health Coach Kept Me Accountable
Through the Medifast Take Shape for Life program, I had a free health coach who consulted with me by phone and email. Not only did she offer great advice and encouragement, she also kept me accountable by tracking my weight.
It’s been almost three months now since I lost 30 pounds, and I’m still maintaining my goal weight. My experience at the mall this past weekend was the opposite of that disastrous shopping trip last September. I found a beautiful dress for my daughter’s wedding, and it fit me perfectly.
