Working in restaurant kitchens involves a lot of time standing on cement floors. Sure, there are usually rubber mats right at the work table where the cooks stand, but I have never been in a professional kitchen that was not primarily cement or tile over cement floors. Sciatica is a common experience for people in the food business because there are so many hours of standing up and lifting heavy containers. It nearly drove me crazy dealing with the pain.
Sleepless Nights, Prescription Painkillers
Having sciatica is somewhat like having a knife shoved into your lower back and another one through your hip. The pain is constant and throbbing, traveling all the way down your leg. There was nothing I could do to get away from it. There was no amount of walking, stretching, sitting down, or laying flat on my back that helped. It kept me awake at night. There were times I pounded on my back, hip and leg with my fist to get the throbbing to stop. I tried painkillers from the pharmacy shelves. My doctor gave me a prescription for heavy duty pain killers and muscle relaxants. Those provided temporary relief, but did not take care of the root of the problem.
After 8 months of barely any sleep that left me feeling exhausted and very irritable, I heard about a naturopath that treated athletes with sports injuries. I scheduled an appointment to see him at his Las Vegas wellness center. It was quite an interesting experience. We started out with a friendly chat about my lifestyle and general health habits. Then he hooked me up to a ZYTO machine and did a computer scan of my body from head to toe.
The results from the scan showed that I was dealing with some food allergies and a high amount of sulfur and mercury in my body. Apparently there is sulfur in many of the pharmaceuticals we are prescribed, as well as in the meat we buy from the grocery store. Mercury comes from eating fish.
The naturopath gave me a list of foods to avoid that were disagreeable to my system – bread and other products with gluten, sesame seeds and a few other things. He also gave me a list of supplements to take that helped with detoxifying the body, including one that helps clear out waste materials that cause inflammation around the nerve cells. For several weeks I underwent laser energetic detoxification treatments and ozone sauna sessions to get rid of the heavy metals.
After six weeks the pain from the sciatica was totally gone, and has never come back. The naturopath explained that heavy metals in our system can have a variety of effects; it all depends on the individual person. What amazed me is that I didn’t have to go for any type of physiotherapy or massage therapy. I got relief from the sciatica simply by clearing the toxins out of my body and eating the right foods.
