Super-sized hair is back but unlike the ’80s version, this trendy look isn’t all about hairspray and a teasing comb. The finished look should be smooth and silky but if you have fine hair you could end up with limp and flat without some work. As a full time makeup artist and part time stylist, I love helping women pull together their desired look. If she’s got soft, fine hair, I suggest the follow method for getting bigger hair, now! It’s pretty easy to do but you’ll need a few supplies.
What will you need for super-sized hair?
- Volumizing shampoo and conditioner
- A blow dryer (I prefer tourmaline)
- Thickening cream
- A round brush (the bigger the better)
- Flat iron
Start with fresh clean hair. By using volumizing products, you’ll be able to fluff your mane quiet easily. Read the label; it should say “volume-boosting” or “volumizing.”
The next step for adding volume to fine hair is the drying. First, blot away excess water with a towel. Comb out the tangles. Squirt a small amount of thickening cream into your hand and rub it into your hair, starting at the roots.
Take the round brush in your hand and lift up a section of hair starting at the crown. Brush the hair under and begin to blow dry the hair in sections. Blow and pull, using the round brush to lift hair at the roots. Do this for all your hair, alternating sides to keep your hair from flattening.
If you want a wavy look with your super-sized hair, blow dry your hair upside down until the crown is dry. Clip this section up, revealing the hair underneath. Use a flat iron to straighten the bottom section of the hair. This will make the top of the hair, where you need that volume, look even fuller.
Now lightly spray a section from the top of the hair, then slide a flat iron over the section. Continue to spritz the hair, straighten and release the hair. Do not flatten the hair at the roots. I recommend keeping the flat iron at least 3-inches away from the roots.
If you still can’t get the “oomph” you want, try a hairpiece. There are some gorgeous ones out there. They won’t even know!
