A car moved it’s away across a long stretch of highway with corn fields to the right and left. In the car were a typical family, two parents, and one teenage daughter. The daughter in the back seat was Kate Burch with her two parents in the front Geoff Burch and Madison Burch. Kate was staring out of the window at the never ending rows of corn. Kate pulled out her cell phone and saw no new messages; she looked out the window again and sighed. Both parent’s noticed the sigh and Geoff was the first to ask “what’s wrong, honey?” Kate pushed her head against the window and let out a groan “I hate the idea of moving, couldn’t you have just left me in New York?” The mother was the one to reply to this question “no honey it wouldn’t have been safe, also this will be good for you meet new people and experience a new way of life a small town has to offer.” Kate let out another groan showing her detest for that answer, her father quickly added on to the mother’s statement “I also hear they have a puffy dress story at Bleakville, you know the type of dresses you like.” Kate rebutted with “first dad it’s called Lolita, and second it’s probably a bunch of cheap material and knock off accessories.” Kate looked back out the window still upset and the parent’s stayed quiet knowing that weren’t going to be able to convince their daughter as the car kept moving forward to Bleakville.
The family finally arrived to Bleakville; they drove through the small town with the parents admiring the homey fill while the daughter only got more homesick. The car finally pulled up to a two story house in a small neighborhood of the town. As the family exited the vehicle the moving truck was already there waiting for the family but Kate couldn’t get off the feeling that something was watching her. As the father went to talk to the moving men, Kate started to move around the yard searching for the reason that she felt like something was watching her. She stared at the neighbor’s house and saw a telescope at one of the windows and at the telescope was a teenage boy, he had short dark brown hair and dark rings around his eyes, he narrowed his eyes at Kate contemplating something but Kate didn’t like the idea of this random person staring at her so she moved to the garage to escape the sight of the stranger. She stood in the garage towards the side so the moving men can get the furniture inside the house and she decided to take the initiative and stop this person in case he has any intention to spy on her.
As soon as the house was all set up and Kate’s parents were sitting comfortably in the living room she decided to make her move. She left the house and moved over to the neighbor’s house and furiously knocked on the door, Kate waited a minute or two but there was no reply. Kate tried again but used both hands this time, the door opened a little and stopped being held by a chain, Kate saw it was the same guy who was staring at her looking at her through the bit of the door that was open “what?” the stranger said with hostility. Kate responded back with even more hostility “listen to me jerk; if you keep staring at me like some kind of pervert then I’m going to have to hurt you.” The door opened up completely showing that whoever he was he took poor care of himself and looked rather sloppy. The stranger had a curious look in his eye “how were you able to say that?” Kate got an even more confused look on your face “what do you mean?” The stranger instantly grabbed hold of Kate’s arm and pulled her inside the house and Kate started to panic trying to pull away from the stranger “what are you doing?” The stranger didn’t reply and she found herself in the kitchen of the house, it was filled with newspaper clippings and red pieces of strings connecting certain pieces of paper together. The stranger grabbed a fold able chair from the side of the room and sat it up “please take a seat.” Kate took a seat in the metal chair in fear that if she didn’t obey she would get hurt, the stranger got in front of her “first thing, my name is Michael Krewski and I am the only one you can trust because now we need to get you out of this town because you are in danger.”
Kate started to panic and quickly pushed over Michael and made a dart for the door, she ran through the door and instantly went home. Kate went into the living room and got in front of both her parents and started to panic “the freak next door pulled me into his house and threatened me.” Kate wasn’t expecting the reaction she got both of her parents were just giving her blank stares like as if they didn’t hear her. Kate tried to explain again “the freak next door tried to kidnap me and threatened me.” The parents just stared at her until her father suddenly got a face of enlightenment and said “yes honey the house next door is for sale, hope you don’t expect to move out to soon.” Both the parents chuckled and Kate stared at them in aghast because that wasn’t what she said and it’s like they completely ignored her but at the same time were giving her their exact attention. Kate ran up to her room scared of what was going on and scared of what was happening to her parents.
Kate spent the rest of the day in her room in a panic trying to understand what it all means. As night came she got into her pajama’s, crawled into her bed and laid her head down on the pillow and began to drift off into sleep. Kate then woke up unsettled and facing the wall, darkness filled the room expect for the light of the moon coming through the window. Kate had a feeling of uneasiness that if she turned over she would see something she wouldn’t like and it would end in disaster. She then heard a bizarre voice that sounded like a man and woman at the same time “wake up Ms. Kate or else it won’t be any fun.” Kate got in a panic and refused to move scared that she could die. Kate decided she was going to make a break for it and without hesitation through her blanket off and at the home invader. The blanket landed over the home invader and she got to her feet on the bed ready to jump out of the way if he attacked. The home invader removed the blanket from his face and it was inhuman, the monster had a human legs but the top half looked like a pile of black muck with eyes and mouth attached randomly and tentacles coming from his body. “It hurts Ms. Kate but I’m going to make you hurt to” a tentacle shot out of its body and Kate jumped to the side landing off the bed on the ground. The monster removed the tentacle leaving a hole now in the bed and Kate quickly moved for the door. She got to the door and desperately tried to open it but it felt like it was locked. She turned around to face the monster and stayed still in a ready position to move. The creature lunged itself at Kate with half of its body becoming a mouth trying to eat her, she rolled out of the way towards the window. She unlocked the window and opened it as quickly as possible; Kate exited out of the window and found herself on side of the house and realizing she had nowhere left to run.
The monster started to slide of the window but was doing it quite awkwardly. Kate looked down at the ground thinking that she would survive if she jumped but knowing it might fracture a leg making it impossible to run so the monster could get her. Kate then heard a yell from the house next door and saw at the window with the telescope was Michael pushing a ladder across to make a bridge for her. Kate got on the ladder and started to slowly moving across the ladder but the monster wasn’t far behind her. “Common just a bit farther” Michael cried to Kate. Kate finally got to the other side and jumped into the room and Michael instantly pushed the ladder out of the window having it fall to the ground as well as the monster. Kate quickly hugged Michael “thank you so much for saving me; by the way my name is Kate.” Michael blushed as he said “well Kate it wasn’t any trouble.” Kate looked out the window at the unmoving creature “what is that thing?” Michael looked out the window with Kate “I’m not too sure, but I do know one thing about it.” Michael paused as the black gunk on the monster started to evaporate revealing a corpse underneath it “it needs a human host to survive”.
Kate and Michael both moved down stairs into the kitchen, Michael made Kate some tea to calm her nerves. Kate shipped the tea but still shaking from the experience “Michael, what is going on in this town? First my parents can’t understand a word I say and now this, what’s going on?” Michael looked at Kate “this town is known as the happiest town in the country for a reason because everyone is forced to be happy or at least from what I observed.” Kate sipped some more tea “why?” Michael responded “so then citizens don’t notice the disappearing people.” Kate was shocked by this answer “why are people disappearing?” Michael pulled up a seat next to Kate “I don’t know what is taking people and I don’t know what they want with them, but I do know this the people in this town are livestock and for some reason it’s only adults because if you pay attention enough you will notice are no teens, children, or any form of schooling in this town, which means that people of a younger age are immune to it which is the hypothesis I thought up after meeting you.” Kate was letting this entire situation sink in “so me threatening you showed I wasn’t brainwashed, does that mean that thing was trying to kill me for that reason?” Michael nodded his head “probably, and before you ask they don’t come after me because I don’t sleep, so if you would like you can sleep over at my place and I’ll protect you but we need to work together so we can survive because know that there is two of us I don’t know what the forces we are going up against are to do”. Michael opened his hand and reached it out to Kate, Kate took hold of his hand and shook it “alright, I guess we will be working together now”.
