Once thing I truly enjoy about homeschooling is being able to adapt what I am teaching to my child’s learning style. Also the fact that I am teaching my child how to live in the real world. When it comes to teaching shopping skills we have the ability to learn key math skills, as well as key reading skills. If you are a homeschooling parent and looking to learn how to do this, keep reading below.
Set up a budget
Start by showing them how to set up a budget for shopping. Give them an amount to use, and then have them make up a list of items that are needed for the home. This is a good time to teach them how to use a graph, or a chart. I like to make a shopping chart. On the top of the chart I put the total amount of the budget. On the lines below I like to create the list. Using the Open Office computer program I show them how to list the items they need to buy.
Plan your shopping trip
Sometimes you have to travel to several different stores to plan your shopping trip. Have your child look through the fliers to see what items on their list are on sale. This is where the reading skills come into play. They will need to carefully read through the fliers.
Learn about percentages
Next you will want them to learn what to do when they see a sale that says 20% off. This is a good time to teach them about percents. Using a notebook gives them some sample prices for one or two of the items on the list. Then help them see how much the item will be if it is for sale. Without using a workbook you just taught them an important life skill. This way when they reach the store they will not need to use a calculator to figure out the exact price of an item. Remember that it may take some trial and error at first, but they will figure it out eventually.
Time management can also be taught through the shopping process. One important skill that children have to learn is that shopping should not take all day. They need to know how to budget their time wisely. As you are walking through the store, remind them of how long you have been in the store. Some have found it easier to have a stop watch keep track of the time spent in the store. It will also help them to appreciate the fact that if they are careful with their time, they will be able to get a lot more done.
