COMMENTARY | Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seems to have changed her mind about Russia and Vladimir Putin in the wake of the Rape of the Ukraine. Out is the reset button and Putin as a partner for peace. In is Putin as – Adolf Hitler.
“Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton addressed the ongoing crisis in Ukraine at a fundraiser in California on Tuesday, comparing Russia’s decision to issue passports in the Crimean region to the “population transfers” carried out by Nazi Germany before World War II.
“Clinton made the remarks at a $1,500-per-plate fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach at a law firm downtown, Keesal, Young & Logan.
“The comments were Clinton’s first known public statement about the still-shifting situation in Ukraine, where an estimated 16,000 Russian troops have been mobilized in the Crimean region since Saturday. Clinton, since leaving the State Department, has been cautious about how and when to weigh in on national security developments.”
The comparisons of Putin with Herr Hitler may be apt – just compare the Crimea with the Sudetenland – even if it does smack of violating Godwin’s Law. However is also suggests that Barack Obama is the Neville Chamberlain in this crisis, ineffectually trying to get control of the situation, to no avail. To be sure, we predicted this would happen, but are surprised that it would happen so soon.
Hot Air suggests that this hawkish stance might give an opening for a left wing challenge to Clinton in the 2016 primaries, should she decide to run. That actually might be to Clinton’s advantage. She could cast herself as a more muscular type of Democrat who, like her husband, is not prepared to let tyrants like Putin push the United States around. If Elizabeth Warren or Howard Dean goes George McGovern on her, she would seem to be stronger and more reassuring, not a bad place to be going into the fall of 2016, especially if she were to go against a relative isolationist like Rand Paul.
