One of our favorite TV personalities, HGTV darling David Bromstad, has expanded his scope of design work outside of interior decor and into the realm of fashion. This month the artist, known for bold pops of color, has teamed with Naturalizer to create a line of women’s shoes and handbags.
Wait? Did we say shoes? Yes. You heard right. At a recent press event, the designer said Naturalizer approached him and asked if he would consider collaborating on a project. It seems the women’s brand, known more for comfort than style, was looking to freshen up their line and they thought David was the man for the job.
The Naturalizer Collection Features Lots of Color
The entire collection features a print created by Bromstad. Originally an artist, he typically works a painting into every design and his shoe line is no different. The artwork, “North meets South” captures his northern upbringing with peonies and his current southern roots with hibiscus, all in that colorful, vibrant, Bromstad signature style.
As an interior designer, Bromstad is known for adding bright splashes to every room on his TV show “Color Splash” yet he also knows not everyone is daring enough to be surrounded by color – just a hint will do for some. The same is true for the Naturalizer spring line which in includes, sandals, flats, flip flops and wedges.
He said of his collection, “It says a lot about who I am. It’s colorful but we have a lot of options. You can definitely wear a flat that has a lot of color in it or you can definitely do something more subtle. I’m all about combining pops of color here and there. You don’t have to wear all color to make a statement.”
Connecting the Dots from Home Decor to Fashion
And while it seems like a bit of a stretch for an interior designer to make the leap to shows, Bromstad connected the dots. “Shoes are an accessory. And when you have an accessory in your home it is supposed to enhance your home. It’s supposed to give something a little bling, a little fun. And that’s exactly what shoes and bags do. They give you a lot of fun. At first when Naturalizer was like, ‘Do you want to design women’s shoes?’ I was like, ‘That’s so weird.” But it actually really fits beautifully.”
Bromstad Teases his Fall Naturalizer Line
Bromstad also teased his upcoming fall line which is already in the production. It features biker boots, booties, leather, lots of buckles and animal prints. With arms raised in the air he revealed the name of the painting used for the line “Animal Fantabulous!”
He continued, “It’ so beautiful. It’s so chic… It screams sex, which is something Naturalizer has never done before.” He described the collection as mostly blacks, browns and wines ands the print will incorporate his painting which is a combination of animal prints from python to snow leopard to zebra.
“It’s very sexy and everyone’s going to want to wear them. I want to wear them!”
