May 9: Marlins (20-16) 1, Padres (16-21) 10 — Box Score
Miami’s ace Jose Fernandez wasn’t his regular self against the San Diego Padres as he was roughed up for six runs and exited the game after five innings in a 10-1 loss.
San Diego’s Tyson Ross looked like the dominant pitcher in the game as he delivered seven innings while allowing just one run and striking out eight batters.
In the game, the Padres scored a pair of runs in the second and eighth, but did the majority of their damage in a six-run sixth frame.
San Diego’s Jedd Gyorko had a huge game against Fernandez as he went 3-for-4 with six RBIs. He started the game’s scoring with a two-run homer to right field in the second. He then knocked Fernandez out of the game when he sent his 2-0 offering over the left-field wall for a grand slam in the sixth.
Reliever Brad Hand didn’t have much more success as he was touched up for three hits and two runs before closing out the inning.
Miami’s Marcell Ozuna got rid of the team’s goose egg on the board when he belted his sixth homer of the year — a solo shot — in the seventh frame.
The Padres’ Seth Smith closed out the game’s scoring when he doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth to make the game 10-1.
