During the late Spring to early Fall one of the best things you can do for vacation is go to the beach. Every summer since I was a small child I have been traveling around the country to go to new beaches with friends and family. When going to the beach you want to relax, enjoy the scenery, and have fun, however, some beaches are best to be avoided if these are your intentions. Here are some of the worst beaches in the country that I have visited on vacation which you may want to avoid when decidding your next trip.
Ocean City, MD
This beach is relatively close to my home and is a popular spot for the teen and young adult type party crowd. However, as I got older I started to realize that this was less than a prime beach for the standard adult. While there is a wide variety of things to do from the boardwalk attractions to good eating, it is mostly geared toward a younger crowd. Although I used to go to this beach with my family when I was younger I don’t feel it is the best for a family vacation either. The large amount of drunk people and often dirty pier and town often leave something to be desired for a great vacation.
Kamillo Beach. Hawaii
This beach I only visited once while on vacation with my grandmother and the only reason was to show me why no one would want to go there. This beach was literally filled from side to side with various types of trash such as bottles, cans, and other various debris. This trash comes from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which collects floating debris from around the world due to uniquely unfortunate geography. Although there have been more than one attempt to clean the beach it is quickly undone by the tide bringing in the trash from far out at sea. Oddly enough even despite the clutter some people were there the day we decided to go.
Jersey Shore, New Jersey
If you love the television show Jersey Shore, you may be tempted to visit this beach to meet the Guido or Guidette of your dreams, but I highly recommend reconsidering. The beach is known to be filled with trash and more than one person has ended up in the hospital from stepping on broken glass in the sand. Apart from the very few tourist attractions to chose from it has very little to offer the standard beach vacation enthusiast. Crime runs high here and apart from the college crowd you will find very little social interaction or entertainment. If you have the choice to go somewhere else, choose to reweighyour options.
Virginia Beach, Virginia
This is another beach near my home that I feel should be avoided for more than one reason. The atmosphere of this beach town is lethargic at best most of the year and you will find very little to do on most days. I found that even in the summer the water here is cloudy and remains some of the coldest ocean water I have ever experienced. Along with this there are a huge amount of jellyfish and anemones that will sting you if you are not careful both in and out of the ocean. While this beach may have been a great place to visit many years ago it now is an eyesore that has a more industrial feel over anything else.
New Smyrna Beach, Florida
This beach is one to be avoided for more scarier reasons. Along with the often dirty cityscape it is home to one of the most shark infested beaches in the world. More shark attacks happen at New Smyrna than anywhere else in the world, with the total being 238 attacks to date. Along with this horrible danger I found that nine out of every ten people we met on our trip was very rude and no matter where we went, we definitely felt out of place in bars, restaurants, and attractions. While at first glance this may look like a nice place to visit, it quickly loses its charm after a few hours.
On a lighter note there are some amazing beaches that I have visited that have held true in my favorites over time. These beaches are clean, fun, and the people are friendly, making them a great place to visit.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Panama City Beach, Florida
Palm Springs, Florida
Long Beach, California
Rehobeth/ Nags Head/ Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina
WHen choosing your beach vacation this summer you should pick somewhere that appeals to your style of vacationing. Although you might have a good time at one of these bad beaches I highly recommend choosing another destination. Have a great summer!
