There are hundreds of different encounters in the PC game FTL: Faster Than Light. Space battles are generally rather similar, depending on the layout of your ship, but text encounters vary greatly. In a text encounter, sometimes you will have a blue option. Blue options are almost always universally better than normal options, but can only be unlocked by possessing a specific piece of equipment, specific system upgrade, a specific race of crew member. A Slug crew member can provide you blue options in eight different encounters, including one that can unlock an entirely new ship for you. The following guide to Slug crew member blue options will help you maximize your chance of finding and taking advantage of these options in FTL: Faster Than Light.
Zoltan Security Perimeter Checkpoint – Only found in Zoltan sectors, this simple event has asks you to submit your crew to profiling. The only way you can avoid a battle with a normal option involves losing a crew member. If you have a Slug crew member, though, you can instead gain fuel at no cost. This is definitely your best choice.
Slug Pirate Captain Nights – Occasionally blue options are risky, and this is one of those cases. If you take either normal option, you engage in a battle with the pirate ship. If you take the Slug crew member blue option, there are three possible results. One result ends without you getting any resources and a second result earns you a weapon and resources. The final result ends in a ship battle that starts with two Slug boarders. It is worth risking this final option since Slug boarders aren’t that difficult and a free weapon is a great deal if you get it.
Sleazy Slug Traders – In a nebula in Slug space you will find a trade vessel escorted by a military vessel. The trade vessel will offer to sell you goods. If you decline, you can end this event peacefully. If you accept, you will eventually have a few choices. All choices lead to one of two results: a battle or a store. The vast majority of choices lead to battle, usually with boarders to begin or systems disabled. You can assure a fair fight if you take the blue option, but that will never get you the store. You can only get the store by taking the normal “Not a problem” option, though the majority of the time this will instead lead to a battle where you are at a major disadvantage.
Life Detected on Moon – After detecting life, you will have the opportunity to investigate the signal. If you find a man in a recently attacked settlement, you easily get a free crew member. But, if you find a man in a cave, there is a high chance of a bad result. Having a Slug crew member assures you that you can’t get a bad result. You may get nothing or you may get a new crew member, but nothing bad will happen to your ship. If you have an upgraded medbay, the medbay blue option is better than the Slug member crew blue option. But otherwise choose the Slug option.
“Assistance” From a Slug Ship – This event can only occur when you have run out of fuel. A Slug ship will offer you fuel for scrap. If you take the offer normally, you will be robbed. If you have a Slug crew member, you can get the fuel for the agreed upon price.
Six Legged Horses – This encounter is rather common and you have a good chance of running into it more than once in a game. If you see a planet with an unknown life form, investigate it. It will contain a bunch of six legged horses. You can choose to communicate with them or abduct them. At best, you might get a new crew member if you try to communicate. Alternately, if you have a Slug crew member, you will always get a new crew member by taking that option.
Disabled Rock Transport – You can only run into this event in a Rock sector. You will know you found it because you will get a report of a disable rock transport floating in space. In this event, a Slug crew member helps immensely. Without one, no matter what option you take, you have a chance of engaging in a battle. The Slug crew member blue option always avoids a battle and gets you resources.
Slug Cruiser Unlock – You can only unlock the Slug cruiser in an event in the Slug Home Nebula. First you need to fight a Slug vessel and let the enemy surrender. If the enemy offers you a prototype weapon, decline the offer. This will unlock a quest marker. At the quest marker you will have a chance to tail an enemy vessel. If you do so, you will be given multiple choices. The Slug crew member blue option results in a battle that nets you the Slug Cruiser as an unlocked ship at the end of the battle.
