There are hundreds of different encounters in the PC game FTL: Faster Than Light. Space battles are generally rather similar, depending on the layout of your ship, but text encounters vary greatly. In a text encounter, sometimes you will have a blue option. Blue options are almost always universally better than normal options, but can only be unlocked by possessing a specific piece of equipment, specific system upgrade, a specific race of crew member. Repair Drones can potentially give you blue options in three encounters. The convenience of this is that Repair Drones are often free with a ship or Drone Control and these options tend to give great rewards. The following guide to Repair Drones blue options will help you maximize your chance of finding and taking advantage of these options in FTL: Faster Than Light.
Fire at Research Station – This is one of the most common distress beacon events in the game. It can occur in almost any type of sector, except Engi sectors. A Repair Drone will net you a new drone schematic, which you can clearly use because you must have a Drone Control system in order to use a Repair Drone. If you don’t want a schematic, or don’t have the room for one, and you also have a Rockman crew member, you can take that blue option to get a free augmentation instead. You should avoid all normal options, even if you don’t want or can’t hold a drone schematic, because they often lead to lost crew members or hull damage.
Mantis Ships Battling – You will only find this event in a Rock Controlled sector and only at a beacon that does not have a distress signal. When you arrive at the beacon, two Mantis ships are battling each other to get the spoils from a disabled Rock freighter. Unless you want to ignore this event, every single option except for one results in a battle with a Mantis ship. The one option that doesn’t result in a battle is conveniently the Repair Drone blue option. This option actually gives more resources than any other option and doesn’t require you to engage in battle. Be careful when choosing this option. If you also have a Hull Repair Drone, you will see two blue options. If you accidentally choose the Hull Repair Drone blue option, you will be forced to engage in a battle for your spoils rather than get them for free.
Small Ship in Asteroid Field – This event is very rare because you can only find it at a distress beacon in the Rebel Stronghold sector. Unlike the normal options, the Repair Drone blue option is entirely safe. Though, if you don’t have either Long-Ranged Sensors or level 3 sensors, there is a chance you will gain nothing from this option, since the option can send you on a quest where one of those two things may be required to gain resources at the quest location. If you don’t have either, and you do have Rock Plating or a Crew Teleporter, choose one of the options those grant instead, because they assure you of resources. If you have all of that equipment, all options are roughly equally good.
