Drive-In theaters are not as popular as they once were. Consequently, many of the drive-in theaters throughout the country have closed down. With the advancement of technology, individuals are increasingly viewing movies online or viewing movies on demand through their cable provider. However, drive-in theaters can provide a unique experience that differs from the above. There are only two drive-in theaters that remain open in the South Florida area. They have stood the test of time and still maintain a loyal fan base despite consumers shifting to indoor movie theaters and instant on-demand access.
Swap Shop Drive-In
The Swap Shop Drive-In has been a local favorite for many years. It is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and it is one of the largest drive-in theaters in the state of Florida. By day, the space operates as a flea market. In fact, it is one of the largest flea markets in the United States. The drive-in has over 14 screens and show over 17 movies a week.
When opening in 1963, it was called the Thunderbird. Within three years after its opening, the swap shop started. What makes that Swap Shop Drive-In different from most drive-in theaters is that they show first run movies only. Most drive-in theaters only show second run films or movies that have already been in the theaters. Their first run movies are offered at an unbelievable price of $6 for adults, $2 dollars for kids 5 to 11, and free admission for any children under the age of 5. This is much less than what you would pay should you visit an indoor movie theater at night.
South Florida’s warm weather allows the drive-in to operate all year round. Their concession stand offers a variety of snacks and goodies. Including but not limited to popcorn, candy, and soda. Finding a parking spot is relatively easy due to its massive location.

Lake Worth Drive-In
The Lake Worth Drive-In is located in Palm Beach County. It is owned by the same company as the Swap Shop Drive-in located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is much smaller then the Fort Lauderdale location. However, it offers the same amenities such as first run movies and a concession stand. Unlike the Fort Lauderdale location, they do not offer movies every night. It is best to check the company’s website to see what nights they will be showing movies.

If you are seeking a drive-in theater and you are in the South Florida area, you should definitely stop by one of these locations. The theater experience is quite different from the traditional in door theater in that it is more intimate and many find it to be more pleasurable.
