Since the game was first released, every single original X-Men character in Marvel: Avengers Alliance, and most of the newly released ones as well, has received at least one alternate costume. The leader of the X-Men, Cyclops, has received two alternate costumes, each with two class variations. These uniforms each offer Cyclops new powerful special abilities that are each useful in different settings. The following guide to Cyclops alternate costumes in Marvel: Avengers Alliance will help you acquire and best use these impressive alternatives.
Phoenix Five Cyclops – Blaster, 45CP / Tactician, 34CP
Limited Availability – This costume was originally only available for sale during Special Operation 3. It has since been made available at least once during a holiday sale and will likely be available again during a future holiday sale.
Special Ability: Phoenix Potential: Flames of Destruction – This ability has a chance of activating at the start of any member of your team’s turn. When it does activate, all attacks made by that teammate are critical hits and ignore defense for the turn. This is the same ability that blasters get when attacking bruisers and does not stack. As such, while this is handy, it is greatly devalued if Cyclops or any of your team is a blaster.
Team-Ups – Good heroes to team Cyclops with are those that have at least one attack with the Deadly Crits special ability. Spider-Woman, an otherwise usually underpowered hero, actually provides a rather good team up with this version of Cyclops because her Brawl attack does rather massive damage when it scores a critical hit. Even without the Deadly Crits special ability, any hero that normally hits like a truck gets a sizable improvement from Phoenix Five Cyclops.
Overall – Until the Uncanny Cyclops uniform was released, this was a favorite in PvP. But, while critical hits are nice, and can especially be a game changer in some PvP matches, this uniform isn’t worth spending gold on. If it happens to be on sale for command points, it is good enough to buy, especially since the Uncanny Cyclops uniform is so hard to get. If you do own it, your main use for it should be boss battles with a boss that constantly increases defense or reduces damage, like Destroyer.
Uncanny Cyclops – Blaster / Tactician
Season 2, Chapter 2 Mastery – The only way to acquire these two costumes is to get 100% mastery in chapter 2 of season 2 of Marvel: Avengers Alliance. This requires about 1000 command points worth of heroes, which essentially makes the Uncanny Cyclops costume very expensive.
Special Ability: Don’t Die on Me – When an attack would reduce one of your teammates to 0 health, this ability has a chance to revive the character at 1% health. This ability can even work on Cyclops, though it won’t function against ongoing damage. While the chance for saving a hero is low (only 25%), it is basically never bad for a teammate to survive, which means this ability is basically always useful.
Special Ability: Uncanny Leadership – All of your characters have a chance to gain an extra turn after attacking. On average you will get about one extra turn per round, assuming all of your characters attack each round. This does mean you want to avoid using characters with non-attack options like Psylocke, but that limitation doesn’t stop this from being an amazing ability.
Team-Ups – Cyclops works especially well with heroes that build up over multiple attacks like Deadpool or heroes that can exploit debuffs that hero places, like Wolverine. Cyclops also can work with heroes that have non-quick action buff abilities, like Storm, but only if you remember to attack before using any buff abilities. In general, when teaming heroes with Cyclops, you want them to use quick action buffs, rather than have to rely on the randomness of Uncanny Leadership or waste an opportunity for it to activate.
Overall – Uncanny Cyclops is definitely the premiere version of Cyclops for both PvP and PvE. The only exception to this is boss fights with very high defense enemies. And, since Cyclops currently only has one particularly good E-ISO, you aren’t even making a sacrifice by equipping this costume. While the special abilities on this uniform are very good, they don’t require any sort of special attention on your part, except to avoid using an item like the Shepherd’s Staff with Uncanny Cyclops. The ease of using this costume is part of what makes it so important to try to get it if you can afford the time, energy, and hero cost involved in obtaining it.
