Alternate costumes in Marvel: Avengers Alliance usually require nothing more than purchasing the original hero and then spending additional command points on a specific alternate costume for that hero. Chapter mastery outfits are different, though. You gain them by getting 100% mastery in a specific chapter in season 2 and when you get the costume you get two different class versions of it. This generally requires that you own over 1000 command points worth of heroes and perform tasks that take a few weeks to complete. The following guide to chapter mastery alternate costumes in Marvel: Avengers Alliance reveals everything you need to know about each of these outfits and helps you decide which are worth the effort of acquiring.
Chapter 1: Heroic Age Iron Fist – Bruiser / Scrapper
Special Ability: Pure of Spirit – Iron Fist takes reduced damage from all magic attacks and is immune to magic negative effects. Additionally, when he uses Heart of Shou-Lao, each of his other three powers are altered in affect for the remainder of the round. Immunity to negative magic effects make Iron Fist a very popular PvP character because he is immune to the Scroll of Angolob.
Altered Power: Five Fingers of Death – This is the upgraded K’un L’un Combo. The power gains brutal strike, wide-open, and fatal blow. It is both a good finishing attack and a good opener with this buff.
Altered Power: White Hot Iron Fist – This upgrade to The Iron Fist adds a ton of new abilities. The attack becomes stealthy, always scores a critical hit, ignores defense, and ignores evasion effects. This is a great attack for dealing high damage with no meaningful status effects, especially if the target is affected by combo setup.
Altered Power: Praying Lotus – This is a much improved version of Healing Chi. It targets the entire team instead of just one character and it prevents debuffs for two rounds rather than just removing them. Since Iron Fist can always use Heart of Shou-Lao, even when stunned, this is an amazing healing ability.
Overall – This version of Iron Fist is a PvP monster. Immunity to Scroll of Angolob allows you to team Heroic Age Iron Fist with a buffing character and tear through enemies without having those buffs removed. He isn’t quite as impressive in PvE because you can use items to mimic many of his advantages.
Chapter 2: Uncanny Cyclops – Tactician / Blaster
Special Ability: Don’t Die On Me – Cyclops has a small chance of saving any character that would be defeated and resurrecting the character with 1% health. This benefit is minor, but stacks well with other resurrection abilities to assure characters don’t die.
Special Ability: Uncanny Coordination – Cyclops has a chance to grant teammates an extra turn after attacking. This ability stacks with the tactician extra attack and can potentially give Cyclops three attacks in one turn.
Overall– Uncanny Cyclops is brilliant due to his ability to grant extra actions. Uncanny Coordination activates, on average, about once a round and is practically assured to activate when Cyclops is teamed with either Quicksilver or Omega Sentinel. This ability does mean that Cyclops and Rescue are a poor combo.
Chapter 3: Original Daredevil – Scrapper / Tactician
Special Ability: Master Assassin – This special ability is identical to the special ability of the same name that Elektra has. When Daredevil is attacked in melee, he has a chance to evade and preemptively counterattack. His already high evasion makes this a modestly useful power and unfortunately it won’t work against infiltrators while he is a tactician.
Overall – Chapter 3 is one of the more frustrating chapters to complete due to tough heroic battles and terrible boss fights. This alternate costume only provides a modest boost in effectiveness. Due to those two issues, it really isn’t worth spending command points on heroes to acquire this costume unless you need those heroes for another purpose anyway.
Chapter 4: Captain Marvel – Tactician / Scrapper
Class Change – Ms. Marvel’s base class is blaster. While wearing this alternate costume, you must change her class. This is usually a benefit, but sometimes means you will have to resort to her Modern Ms. Marvel or Original Ms. Marvel costume in order to use her as a blaster.
Special Ability: Unexploitable – Your entire team becomes immune to extra damage from exploit special abilities. This is exceptionally useful in PvP where exploitation is incredibly common. In PvE it can be helpful, but don’t expect it to come up much.
Overall – Two alternate classes makes this an amazing alternate costume. In fact, it is between this one and Uncanny Cyclops for the one most worth spending command points to acquire. Cyclops is generally a more useful character, but Ms. Marvel is a perfect fit for many boss fights.
Chapter 5: Transian Scarlet Witch – Infiltrator / Blaster
Special Ability: Improbable Opening – This ability is a mixed blessing. It allows Scarlet Witch to preemptively counter single target attacks. Extra damage is always good, especially for a hero that usually spends two out of every three actions performing a non-attack action, but the attack she counters with also has a slight drawback. When it hits a hexed target, it removes the hexed status effect and adds random ongoing damage instead. The problem with this is that hexed is really useful for preventing attacks completely. This ability does increase her damage, but not as much as it seems and can occasionally allow a nasty attack through that would otherwise have been stopped.
Overall – This outfit requires the most expensive set of heroes to acquire and it has a questionably useful benefit. An infiltrator version of Scarlet Witch is a rather useful variant when facing tacticians, but that isn’t a good enough reason to get this outfit. Oddly, the biggest flaw with this outfit is that Scarlet Witch is already quite excellent. A questionably useful buff simply isn’t enough of an improvement to be worth the effort necessary to acquire this costume.
