If your looking for a new outdoor activity to enjoy, there’s a good chance your going to consider hiking, biking, and kayaking. All of these activities are fun, keep you in shape, and can be done in almost any part of the world, making them a very popular choice. If you plan on getting into any of these outdoor activities there are some things to consider before you start. Here are some things I learned that are good to know when pursuing your own outdoor adventure.
The greatest thing about hiking is that it requires no special ability and can be done by anyone, anywhere, at any time. From commercial hiking like national parks and maintained trails to just taking a small hike around your own property, there are thousands of places to hike and many are a short distance from wherever you live. When hiking it’s important to dress accordingly, wearing clothes that will keep you cool but still protect you from the elements you will encounter is a smart move.
When going on long hikes I like to bring a backpack with some food, a camera, a small first aid kit, and a previously frozen bottle of water or sports drink so that I have anything I need during the day.Try to wear shoes that are comfortable but sturdy, staying away from things like sandals or open toe shoes. Remember, leave nature how you found it by cleaning up your trash and not disturbing the wildlife that live in the area.
Bike riding is a very popular outdoor activity and the number of people who enjoy it is growing rapidly each year. While owning your own bicycle has it’s own advantages, there are many places that you can rent one by the hour, day, or week for a fairly cheap price. Biking, like hiking, is very versatile and can be done in many places. Now that it has become a very popular activity for fitness and leisure you can find specially paved bike paths anywhere you live. If your more adventurous then you could choose mountain trails or wooded areas for more of a challenge.
Remember to pick your bike according to the style and type of riding you will be doing and to always wear a helmet to protect yourself from any mishaps that may happen along the way. If you’d like your own bike but buying one new is too expensive check classified ads in the newspaper, online ads and forums, and flea markets for a cheaper alternative.
Probably the most physically demanding but most fun outdoor activity, kayaking is a great outdoor adventure if you love water and want to take on a good challenge. Kayaking can be done almost anywhere there is water such as the ocean, rivers, lakes, ponds, and even some streams. If just starting out on the water find your local community of guides and riders and find some people that enjoy the activity to show you the ropes. Like biking, you can get a kayak by purchasing one or renting one from your local river outfitter. If purchasing your own make sure to choose one that is the right size and type for the water you will be navigating to ensure that it will last for a long time.
While it is the most fun of these three activities, it’s important to remember that kayaking can be a dangerous. According to research from About via George Sayour, there are approximately 6-10 deaths per 2.5 million people taking guided tours and trips. Make sure to have a life jacket and to map the area that you will be boating on to know any possible dangers in rough areas. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting completely wet and get a sealed bag or dry box to keep all of your personal belongings dry, safe, and contained.
Now that you know how to start your adventure, you’re ready to go and enjoy the outdoors. No matter what you choose to do all of these activities are fun, can be enjoyed with family and friends, and are a great way to stay in shape. Have fun and remember to stay safe!
