Grammy Award-Winning Producer and Writer Denzil Foster believes staying true to yourself is the secret to longevity in the entertainment business. Denzil states a great example of an artist staying true to herself and the POP Genre is Madonna, “if she did something that ruffled a few feathers, she would be like ‘Ok, I did it get over it.'”
Denzil’s love of music began at the age of 5; he didn’t come from a family of musicians but his mother was a dancer and music was a big part of their lives. The first instrument he played was a flute, and he was teased for playing it because it wasn’t considered a popular instrument for an African American male and it wasn’t a ‘cool” instrument. Denzil went on to play the Saxophone, and because he could read music and could hear music in his head, he taught himself to play the piano.
Quincy Jones and George Clinton were Denzil’s early influences and when Denzil learned that Quincy Jones attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma. He auditioned as a Saxophone player but ended up getting accepted to Berklee on a partial scholarship in composition. Due to financial circumstances Denzil wasn’t able to attend Berklee abut ended up attending Junior College at LA Community College then transferred to the University of Southern California for a short period of time, and he ended up using some of his tuition money to fund the production of the 90’s hit “Rumors” by the group Timex Social Club in which he was a member of and would become the hit group Club Nouveau.
Denzil Foster and his partner Tommy McElroy are the masterminds behind putting together the group EnVogue that became one of the most successful girl groups in music history. Foster and McElroy are also responsible for signing the band Tony Toni Tone. They also worked on Madonna’s,” Whose That Girl” movie soundtrack and have written and produced a ton of hits such as, the Grammy Award Winner remake of Bill Withers, “Lean on Me”, EnVogues, “Hold On”, “Lil Walter”, Tony Toni Tone, the movies Coach Carter and Money Train soundtracks and their songs have been sampled in mega hits from artist such as Jay Z, Jennifer Lopes, Jessica Simpson and P. Diddy.
Denzil is currently managing Music Producers and Artist and will be working on a couple of projects in 2014. He believes you have to take time to yourself to avoid getting burned out in the entertainment business, take a break to “Live”, and then you can write about it, its not always about the club or studio. For example he states, Country singers tell great stories based on life events.
