Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd and it is the perfect time to get children involved and interested in the environment. Try these activities to raise awareness with your children and keep them involved year round.
Try Your Hand at Composting
Get the kids involved in creating a compost bin. It doesn’t matter what type of bin you use, a trash can or storage tote will work fine. Let them create the sign and then laminate it and stick it on the side of your bin. If you have trouble remembering what should and shouldn’t be composted create a reference sheet with pictures to put on your bin too. The Earth Day Network has a great list of items on their website and tips to get you started.
Start with Recycling
If you haven’t already started recycling now is a great time. A lot of cities are now offering free recycling with their garbage pick-up, check with your city to see if they do. Once you have your bin set up a separate garbage can or box near your trash can in the house for easy disposing of recyclables. You could also keep aluminum cans separate and once you have enough stored up take them in for salvage and get a little extra money.
Enjoy Nature Together
Look for local, state, or national parks in your area to find great hiking trails. Even younger children can enjoy a short walk on a trail. Talk about the different animals and plants you see and about the beauty of nature.
Ditch the Car
If you live close enough to places that you frequent dedicate a day to ditch the car and only commute around town by foot. Talk with your child about why aren’t taking the car. Not only will they get to see parts of town that they haven’t before, you will have an opportunity to teach them about carbon footprints. Speaking of carbon footprints…
Once they have an understanding about carbon footprints, do a fun activity together to reinforce the idea. Trace your foot and your child’s on a large paper. Cut out the feet and write the different things you each do that affect your carbon footprint on one side. Then pick just one thing and work to eliminate it for your routine.
