The article “Father of victim in Santa Barbara shootings to politicians: ‘I don’t care about your sympathy.'” exhibits Richard Martinez’ grief over the loss of his greatest joy–his son
Richard Martinez knows about guns through his upbringing and early career in the US Army and latter career as a criminal-defense lawyer.
The article states that Richard Martinez said about politicians “I don’t care about your sympathy. I don’t give a s— that you feel sorry for me,” Richard Martinez said during an extensive interview, his face flushed as tears rolled down. “Get to work and do something. I’ll tell the president the same thing if he calls me.”
He believes we should ask Congress and President Obama to accept responsibility and do something constructive as the article continues “Saying that “we are all to blame” for the death of his 20-year-old son, Martinez urged the public to join him in demanding “immediate action” from members of Congress and President Obama to curb gun violence by passing stricter gun-control laws.”
I believe the malefactors in this are the GOP and one of its major benefactors, the NRA, as President Obama has proposed the mildest legislation possible to curb gun violence. The “Party of No” obstructed that proposal as they have so many others.
God bless you Richard Martinez who is quoting as saying “Today, I’m going to ask every person I can find to send a postcard to every politician they can think of with three words on it: ‘Not one more.'”
I think he would do better getting a little clarity, which might come in time which is the greatest healer-even of his unimaginable pain.
In the article “The GOP’s Unholy Alliance with the NRA Has Cost Too Many Lives-One is Too Many — How Can the Democrats Cease the GOP’s Symbiotic Relationship with the NRA?” we chronicle how the “Party of No” has allowed the gun violence to continue because they do the bidding of the NRA.
Mr. Martinez knows the NRA’s role in this as the article states “After the news conference, Martinez told reporters to train their cameras on him as he delivered a biting, 80-second speech attacking “craven” politicians and the National Rifle Association.”
Now there a very tiny minority of red and gun state Democrats who vote against gun control. Almost all GOP “Party of No” legislators vote with the NRA.
Mr. Martinez abhors the NRA’s criminal behavior as the article states “He reserved his anger for the NRA, saying he has no understanding for the group’s position on automatic and semiautomatic weapons after a series of mass murders involving such weapons.”
Democrats aren’t in the NRA’s pockets– only the “Party of No” is.
Do you remember right after the Newtown tragedy that no one believed the “Party of No” would obstruct the very mild gun control legislation that was proposed? There was optimism right after that tragedy that we would get something done.
The “Party of No” stifled that.
Do we just give up?
I agree with Richard Martinez in that we should hector the Democrats to every week until the election put up gun control legislation. Get the “Party of No” GOP on the record as allowing the NRA to support giving emotionally unstable individuals access to automatic and semiautomatic weapons that could result in mass murders.
