The Apple iPhone is an incredible piece of portable technology and accessories can make it even better. Here are five great accessories to get the most out of your iPhone 5:
External battery – Powerocks Magicstick
All the technology packed into the iPhone takes a toll on the battery life. Even with careful use, an portable external power source is necessary for realistic daily use without constantly being tethered to a wall outlet. I like the Powerocks Super Magicstick, an external USB battery. The lipstick-sized battery charges in about four hours and then recharges a dead phone to ninety percent of full power in about two. The USB battery retails for $49.95.
Creative lenses – iPro lens
The secret to beautifully, professional photos on any camera is the quality of the lens. The same is true for the iPhone and while the built-in lens produces sharp, clear images, not much creativity is allowed with its average focal length. The iPro Lens System offers wide-angle, fisheye, macro and telephoto clip-on lenses for the iPhone (and Galaxy smartphones). The company has been making cinema lenses for over 25 years and really delivers professional quality optics to the iPhone. The lenses may attach easily, but these are serious, production-level optics used by many professionals. The images captured via the iPro lens are amazing, especially those captured with the wide-angle and fisheye models. Single lenses are around $49 with a full kit (macro, superwide and telephoto) priced at $229.
Heavy duty case – Speck ToughSkin Duo
Perhaps the most important accessory is the protective case in which you keep your iPhone 5. I like to go a bit overboard and have to say I’ve never damaged a phone yet. The Speck ToughSkin Duo provides serious, double-layer protection for the iPhone. A slim inner case offers daily protection and a thicker, outer case with ridges and bumpers gives almost total shock-absorbing protection against drops. A third plastic holder and belt harness completes the $39.95 package.
Bluetooth speaker – soundmatters DASH7
This little Bluetooth speaker system is like a mini-sound bar, with full, rich sound from a rechargeable, portable device. The soundmatters DASH7 includes an 1/8″ input for wired use and also functions as a very good quality speakerphone. It’s a great iPhone accessory and can even provide the sound at a party. I like using the DASH7 to watch movies on Netflix when traveling.
Underwater case – iGills diving system
Perhaps the coolest accessory I’ve discovered is the iGills iPhone diving system. Not only can you use your iPhone underwater (up to 130 feet), but the system includes a diving app that turns the iPhone into a fully functional dive computer, dive log and digital compass. It also allows for beautiful underwater HD video and photography. The case sells for $164.99.
