Militias are used much more often than many people think and serve many more purposes as well. The main function of a modern militia in the United States is to protect against tyrannical government. A perfect example is the current Bundy Ranch raid, which was covered in an article I wrote: Battle for Bundy Ranch. The ways listed below will provide you with the resources if you are interested in creating a militia group.
Firstly, if you have no military experience, you should probably be rethinking your role as commander. Not many people will take you seriously if you lack experience, age, and wisdom. If you have experience, you need to apply it to the militia you are creating. The many militias around the country run entirely of civilians can sometimes be made fun of for their lack of professionalism. Don’t proclaim yourself a colonel and give random ranks such as Lieutenant Colonel, Major and Captain to the first members that walk in. Maintain a 90% enlisted to 10% officer ratio. Meaning if you have 1 officer besides yourself, having to be a 2nd lieutenant, have 18 enlisted men. Pick officers who have prior enlisted or commission experience with any of the branches or with the police. These men will be the leaders you want instruction and inspiring the rest of your enlisted men.
The most important aspect of having a militia is training regularly. Do not fall behind with this. Train to be competent when the time arises for action. Those who are not physically fit should not be allowed to join. Typically the ideal physical fitness is 20 consecutive pullups, 100 crunches in 2 minutes, and an 18 minute 3 mile run. Any member who cannot even come close to these numbers should not be allowed in until these numbers can be close to their own capabilities. Make sure that every member trains in these 3 facets at the very least 2 times a week. Only accept the best, do not stand for below-par standards, this will result in a gaggle of bodies that are useless.
Weapons and weapons training are another vital staple in the militia. Ensure that everyone has at least one combat capable rifle with 500 rounds of ammunition. Again to not accept below par standards unless your life is within danger and every single body is needed. Conduct weapons and gear checks at the very least every 2 weeks. Make sure everyone is proficient with their rifles by going to the range.
Ranking, as said before is very vital to the organizational structure of a militia, so do not make the mistake that you see every wannabe militia make. Choose your officer or officers by who has the best experience, physical training, marksman ship, and most importantly, leadership ability. No one wants to be commanded by a fat incompetent wannabe who has never served in the military. This is harsh how ever lives hang in the balance when you make the choice of who to put in charge below you.
Email close friends, put out fliers at gun clubs, find former vets at the American Legion or VFW and recruit moderately. Only bring in people who are not ignorant and are fully ready for operations and training when you call upon them. Generally recruit ages 17 to 45. How ever only recruit young people if they are extremely capable, mature and willing to obey.
