Finding free Christian puppet skits for church has always been a time consuming task. The goal is always to find a free puppet skit that will teach children while having a message that speaks to adults. This one, based on Matthew 4:18-19 is one that all ages will enjoy.
Skit title: Let’s go fishing.
A pastor and school aged child are in a fellowship hall or hospitality area. The conversation is informal and friendly. The name of the child may be changed to suit the personality of the church. The scripture of Matthew 4:18-19 should be read after the skit is introduced.
TOMMY: Hi Pastor! I have a question.
PASTOR: Hi TOMMY. What’s on your mind?
TOMMY: It’s kind of a hard question to ask.
PASTOR: That’s okay. Sometimes those are the most important. What would you like to talk about?
TOMMY: Jimmy is one of my friends from school. I invited him to church. He said he didn’t want to come.
PASTOR: Did he say why?
TOMMY: Yeah. He said that we don’t have to come to church. He says that you can worship God at home.
PASTOR: That would be troubling. How did you feel when he said that?
TOMMY: Kind of confused. Why do we have to come to church?
PASTOR: The biggest reason for coming to church is to worship God and grow in our faith. Tell me. Do you think that Jimmy was going to worship at home?
TOMMY: No. Jimmy and his dad were going fishing. I really wanted to go fishing. They asked me to come along and everything but…
PASTOR: But, what TOMMY?
TOMMY: I’d get in trouble with Mom big time for missing church! If she grounds me, then I’ll never get to go fishing! Plus… I don’t know. I guess it didn’t feel right.
PASTOR: Well TOMMY, you were right to come to church. True, we can pray to God and worship him wherever we are. When we’re at church we get to worship and talk with other Christians. That’s why coming to church is so important. Plus we get to learn about the fishermen that helped Jesus when He was here on earth.
TOMMY: Fishermen helped Jesus?
PASTOR: That’s right, TOMMY. Matthew 4:18 says that Peter and his brother Andrew were fishermen when they met Jesus. Then they became disciples and followed Jesus.
TOMMY: Wow! I bet that Jimmy didn’t know that!
PASTOR: When Jesus talked with Peter and Andrew he invited them to come with saying that he would make them “fishers of men”.
TOMMY: Fishing? Fishers of men? I can’t wait to tell Jimmy! You know what?
TOMMY: I bet that Jimmy will want to come to church! We can learn a lot about fishermen and following Jesus. I’m going to invite him to church again. Hey, maybe me and Jimmy can go fishing after the service? Mom won’t mind, not as long as I come to church first.
PASTOR: That’s a plan if I ever heard of one.
TOMMY: I’m going to ask him right now. Then we can go fishing and I can catch a trout or a bluegill, or a bass or a… Hey, thanks Pastor! See you on Sunday!
PASTOR: Sounds good!
