Most of the first year games for the XBOX One have been released on both the XBOX One and the XBOX 360. While the One versions usually have superior graphics, they aren’t always the better value. Some games are actually better on the older console. Assuming you own both consoles, the following are games you should purchase for the XBOX 360 instead of the XBOX One.
Skylanders: Swap Force – One of the main advantages of older consoles is that programmers are more familiar with the architecture, due to years of writing code for that console. This is particularly important when writing code for a game that uses complex game play mechanics, like the Skylanders series. The XBOX 360 version of the game consistently garnered better critic scores than the version on the newer console, despite worse graphics. This is because the complicated hardware interactions of Skylanders games were easier to program for the more familiar console. The next game in the series will almost certainly be better on the XBOX One, but for now you should purchase the 360 version.
Titanfall – The XBOX 360 version of this game has notably worse graphics, but it is still the better option. Because Titanfall is a multiplayer only game, the 360 simply has the better user base for it. Many more millions of people own the older system than the newer one, which means there are simply more opponents to play against. Additionally, the worst players have been banned or landed on ignore lists. The XBOX One, as a new system, has a small user base with an untested set of players, some of which are very likely the same players that were previously banned from online 360 play in the past.
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare – All of the reasons that apply to Titanfall also apply to this online only game. Additionally, unlike Titanfall, this was not a game designed specifically for the XBOX One. It is a much more casual game that requires much less hardware to support it. It is the kind of game you want to play with friends, all of which are likely to own a 360, but may not yet own a XBOX One.
Just Dance 2014 – The built in Kinect of the XBOX One makes this seem like a perfect game for the system. But, assuming you own a Kinect for your XBOX 360, that console is the better choice. The XBOX One is an energy hog, even when compared to the 360 and Just Dance is about as casual a game as you can find on the market. There is no reason to increase your electricity bill just to play a game where you dance around like an idiot. Similarly, since this game series doesn’t actually rate or score your dancing, you don’t need the precision found in the Kinect 2.0. There simply isn’t any reason to own this for the One if you can possibly play it on the 360.
