Whether you’re moving from one location to another or moving an elder out of their home, moving poses many challenges. It’s hard work and time consuming. There are a few things that can make it easier and less confusing.
Bins, not Boxes: I’ve moved with both. Bins are by far the better choice. The sturdy plastic means that the bottom won’t fall out if the load is heavy. The fact that it isn’t paper means the box won’t disintegrate or damage the contents if it’s wet. Some have wheels, making moving them easier. I do recommend getting bins with latches so the lids don’t come flying off while driving.
Labeling System: I wish we’d done this from the start instead of halfway through. Get stick on labels (or bins that have dry erase sections for labeling). You can record the bin numbers and contents on your computer or in a notebook. Either way, when you’re looking for something, this system will help you find it without looking in every bin you’ve got.
Place to put Stuff: If you are downsizing, the house you’re moving into isn’t ready or (as in our case) moving an elder out of their home, you need to consider where you’re going to put the items you’re moving.
At first we stored the bins in our home. We had bins in almost every room in the house…including bedrooms, a bathroom and the garage. It quickly became obvious this wasn’t going to work. We now have two storage units and it’s easier to move around in the house. We can now bring the bins to our home at our leisure and go through them.
When to get Help: There are times and things that need moved that require a professionals touch. The furniture in our elder’s home was very heavy. We knew we couldn’t move it ourselves. In fact, we tried one piece and it went badly. Hiring a mover for the heavy stuff is well worth the expense. They have all the proper equipment, they can package it properly for the move and they’re fast. I got dizzy watching them wrap the furniture for moving.
The move we just made was a hundred miles one way. It took several months to accomplish because we chose to do the packing ourselves. It would have been a lot more expensive if we’d had the movers do it…though they can and do. We had the time, so it saved us a goodly sum of money.
