I love to go camping and using a truck camper. In the past, I had an F-250 supercab, long-bed pickup truck. The camper for that truck had a bathroom with a shower, kitchenette with refrigerator, storage, a table, closet and a bed over the cab. It was heavy and only trucks that size could safely carry it.
Since I don’t need a beast like that at the moment, I’m content with smaller trucks such as the Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tundra, Ford Ranger and others of similar size. I used to think I was out of luck trying to find a camper built for it, but today, owners of small trucks have a few options.
Begin by taking note of your truck’s GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating. This is the amount of weight your truck can safely tow and carry at the same time. Never exceed this limit; your truck may not handle safely and you will burn out your engine and transmission before their time. It may also be harder to try to stop it at stop signs or in an emergency.
Here is a list of four ready-made campers for small trucks:
The Six Pack
This camper was produced commercially for a short time specifically for small trucks. Although they are not being manufactured at this time, you might get lucky enough to spot one on Craigslist, in an auto magazine or in the classifieds of a local newspaper.
5.7 Camplite Camper
Camplite campers have all-aluminum construction in the inner/outer walls, table, bed, flooring and the cabinets. What that means is there is no rot, rust or UV damage- ever. The camper features a queen bed and a fold down dinette table that provides additional sleeping space as a second bed. It features a sink, stove, refrigerator and a closet that could easily house a porta potty. Overhead storage, lights, RV windows and ventilation are standard in this unique camper.
Four Wheel Campers
Three models of pop up campers are made specifically for mini/mid-sized pickup trucks, order according to bed length. They feature kitchenettes, beds, sofa, at least 6′ to 6′ 4″ headroom as well as a variety of options.
Choose from floor models or order one custom made for your needs and your truck. Since truck models/bed sizes are fairly standard, when you are ready to sell your truck and camper, there will be a line waiting.
Livin’ Lite Soft-Sided Truck Camper
This amazing aluminum camper looks like a box that slides into the truck bed. When opened, it forms a tent with 2 sofa seats and a dinette table that folds down to form a bed for four people. It also includes storage space for a TV, small ice chest or anything you need to carry. When closed, it’s nearly level with the truck bed, meaning you can place additional items on top and still use your regular driving mirrors.
Models are available for both full size and smaller trucks. With this camper, you don’t have to worry about low branches, bridges or parking garage height restrictions.
Owners of small trucks do not have to rent larger trucks to carry a camper or buy a travel trailer. Just slide in one of these campers and enjoy the great outdoors or sporting events without the cost of a hotel.
