Since open with Walt Disney World’s in 1971, Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom has been one of the most popular lands in the park. And over the years, Fantasyland has continued to grow and expand. Most recently, New Fantasyland opened and was the largest expansion ever at the Magic Kingdom.
Walt Disney once said of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” Like Disneyland, The Magic Kingdom and all of Walt Disney World in fact continue to grow and change. With change, however, some classic Walt Disney World attractions close to make room for new ones. And over the years, several Fantasyland attractions have closed.
Snow White’s Scary Adventures
When Walt Disney World in 1971, Snow White’s Scary Adventures was one of the attractions that guests could enjoy. Based on the hit 1937 film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the attraction was similar to the original that opened with Disneyland in 1955 and has since been recreated at Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.
Snow White’s Scary Adventures, until a 1994 remodel and update didn’t actually include Snow White. Rather, it was a more scary version featuring the Evil Queen seven times. After 1994, Snow White was added and the attraction was made “less scary.”
The attraction closed for good in 2012 as part of the New Fantasyland and the building is now a Disney Princess meet and greet attraction called Princess Fairytale Hall. The Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris versions of the ride continue to operate.
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride
Another opening day attraction at the Magic Kingdom, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was based on the short film, The Wind in the Willows from the 1949 Disney motion picture The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride has been a Disneyland favorites since it opened in 1955 so when planning Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom it seemed like a natural fit to recreate the ride.
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride took riders through scenes from Wind in the Willows in a mad capped adventure from Toad Hall to the English countryside. Along the way, some on Mr. Toad’s friends could be seen including MacBadger and Ratty.
Mr. Toad took his last wild ride at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in 1998 when the attraction closed to make room for a new ride based on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. However, Mr. Toad and the gang still give guests a wild ride at the Disneyland version of the ride.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage
One of the Magic Kingdom’s original attractions, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage was based on a similar Disneyland attraction, Submarine Voyage. Disney Imagineers wanted to take the concept of an undersea submarine voyage and expand on it. They came up with an attraction based on Walt Disney’s hit 1954 film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
The voyage started with the submarine “diving” deep below the surface. Once near the bottom of the ocean, and past a top-side storm, riders would see a ship graveyard of long-ago sunken ships. Heading north, the submarine would reach the North Pole and on it’s journey back to the dock, a giant squid would attack the vessel.
Sadly, the submarines of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage took their last voyage in 1994. The closure was announced as routine maintenance, but the attraction would never reopen. With the lagoon filled in, in 2005 the area Pooh’s Pooh’s Playful Spot. In 2010, Pooh’s Playful Spot was closed and the area is now home to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train as part of the New Fantasyland.
