Many of us work long hours during the week. One of the things that I struggle with is trying to make a great meal for the household. A great way to help your friends and neighbors have one night a week to prepare a meal that will offer you the chance and a great way to accomplish this is by having a food swap.
Best Way to Try to Get That Night Off Next Week
Get together a group of friends and neighbors, for starters. You probably will want to do this with at least four to five people. Having four or five people swapping will allow you to put together three and/or four course meals. You really want to work with your fellow swappers to ensure that you are making efforts to have a swap that will offer enjoyable meals. I always assume an appetizer, a main dish with at least two side dishes and a dessert.
How to Perform the Swap
When it comes to swapping food, consider what you are making and how you will have to distribute it. Will you be swapping with your closest neighbors, work colleagues or a larger circle of friends? If you are doing an exchange with work colleagues, most likely you will perform the swap at work. Having swapped at work, we had to make sure that there would be space to store the food. Generally, that would mean a refrigerator. People meet from what may be varying distances at certain times of the week. If you are doing it with neighbors, I recommend that you not pack the food until you know how it will be rationed. However, do bring packaging for each swapper. This is important if you are packaging something that is liquid, such as a soup or a meat dish that use sauces and/or gravys for seasoning. The biggest issue you will have with swapping is the size of every swapper’s household and its dynamics.
Do We Need to Put Restrictions on This?
Before ensuring that you are going to make sure that all possible participants are taken care of, be aware if anyone has dietary restrictions. Some of the most common restrictions are in the use of excess sugar and salt, nut allergies, along with lactose and gluten intolerance. Not checking to make sure that all swappers can enjoy can really harm the ability to organize more swaps in the future.
Get Better at It
Over time, you will find this enjoyable. When it comes to cooking, sometimes we are not willing to step out and try new things. This can be a great way to learn about new foods and new preparation methods.
