Ninety-nine percent of the time you are picking up that candy bar in the grocery line for pleasure and not necessarily for hunger. A Harvard study concluded that it is easy to overeat when eating for pleasure opposed to eating for hunger. This means many of us are overdoing it!
My Eating Habits
I am an avid eater and I like to eat. A lot. I like wine and I like to drink it moderately. Truth be told, I am actually fascinated with the tastes of food and curious about why it makes me feel good to eat, and will admit that maybe I should talk to someone about my extreme love of eating. Eating for pleasure is often frowned upon for health reasons, but I must add that I do work out regularly to stay healthy and optimize my appearance.
For many years I shopped for a variety of snacks in the following categories to feel like I had the right balance of “treats”:
- sweet pastry/bread
- sweet candy (fruity)
- sweet candy (chocolate)
- “snack drinks”/sodas
From looking at the list, it may seem excessive, but to me, it was enough to satisfy all of my possible snack cravings I could have in a day.
Concerns with Eating for Comfort
The severity of my indulgence of eating wasn’t apparent until my friends were over my apartment eating snacks and having a good time! As we were partaking in my favorite pastime, the TV in the background suddenly demanded our attention. The host announced for the viewers to stay tuned to a talk show about people who eat for comfort, and almost immediately, all eyes turned towards me.
The truth came out. One of my friends told me I was the reason she gained 25 pounds during her freshman year, claiming that I demanded we go eat at the dining halls frequently. I looked at her in utter disbelief. This was the first time I had heard of this and I really believed that she enjoyed eating with me! Someone suggested I take an online “food abuse” questionnaire while my other friend wanted to trace my love of food back to my childhood. In a matter of ten minutes, I became the one who had an inappropriate relationship with food!
Why I Choose to Continue to Eat for Pleasure
Because I am fairly petite, I get a lot of side eye when I am enjoying an abundance of food. Is it a sin to like to eat? It doesn’t bother me to take out my sadness or hard day at life by orchestrating the perfect meal! For all I know, there may not be any food in heaven and I need to enjoy it in its varieties while I am here on earth. Since listening to music and traveling around the world are acceptable means of comfort, today, I declare that eating is also an acceptable pastime. In my defense, I do like eating for pleasure, but I make sure that I eat small portions…to not get full, but that is another topic!
