I’ve been working in the makeup industry for nearly two decades, but before I picked up the first brush set (well, professionally) I had to learn all about skin care. Without a good canvas, no amount of “painting” is going to give you the results you want. Still, changing skin tones can be unavoidable, especially as you get a little older or spend some time in the sun. So what can you do? You don’t have to hire a makeup crew to follow you around or strap a flattering yellow light to your headband. Implement these real woman strategies and get the skin tone you want!
Deal with spots. Denial isn’t an option. Smearing on layers of foundation, concealer and more foundation is not how to deal with spots. You’ve got tackle these bad boys at the cellular level. A recent, in-depth article in Elle suggests that you banish spots with ingredients that contain vitamin A, E, C and of course amino acids. These uneven places won’t disappear overnight but after just a few weeks, you should notice a difference.
Stop further sun destruction. Whether we like it or not, sun is a huge problem for your skin. Those rays not only create disturbances in melanin production, (the source of brown spots) it also creates wrinkles. Boo! Be committed to your skin tone cause–boost your sun protection. Look for makeup and skin care products that build this necessary shield for your epidermis. I recommend products with an SPF of 30 or above.
Commit to monthly facial peels. If you can swing it, make and keep those monthly appointments for a facial peel. However, if you can’t, try a gentler but effective version at home. Look for facial peel products with a citrus base. This totally doable method lifts away the top layer of your skin revealing fresh skin underneath. (Don’t do these more than once a month.)
Add microdermabrasion to your weekly schedule. Sloughing away those fine lines and wrinkles not only feels good it leaves you looking great too! Scrub away uneven skin tone with this once-a-week treatment.
Do mind your diet. Good foods and plenty of water do make a difference when it comes to your skin tone. Don’t believe me? Spend a weekend scarfing down burgers and fries and take a picture of your naked face on Monday. If you truly want pretty skin–you’ve got to eat leafy green veggies and be committed to a lifestyle of water drinking.
Anyone can camo their skin with makeup but it takes someone who is committed to their skin’s health to really tackle tough skin tone issues. With some patience and the right ingredients–you can totally do it!
