If you have the gift of gab and enjoy talking on the phone a career in telesales might be a good fit for you. The successful telesales professional can earn a good living working in many different fields such as Insurance, Finance, and Healthcare to name a few. To succeed in telesales you need to be able to convince someone to purchase a product from you with your voice alone. To do this you need to know how to use your voice to it’s maximum potential. Here are five tips to help you succeed in telesales.
1 – Listen
How many times have you been called by a telemarketer only to have them talk over you, not letting you get a word in edgewise? How did you react? Did you buy their product? Or more likely did you tell the telesales agent that you’re not interested, or worse yet hang up in frustration? All too often the telesales agent is so afraid that the customer will lose interest that they end up verbally steamrolling the customer. Take a step back and listen. How else can you know what your customer needs if you don’t let them tell you?
2 – Steer the conversation
As a telesales agent you are in charge of the conversation and the direction it goes. Far too many telesales agents forget this and let the customers take over. This can only lead to frustration for both parties involved. The customer feels that he is not getting the information he needs and the agent feels that the customer is wasting his time. You are the expert in your field, you know way more than the customer. That is why you need to make sure to lead the customer down the path you want him to go. If the customer gets off course gently but firmly lead him back. This will result in a happy customer and a more productive call for you.
3 – Manage your time wisely
Telesales is all about volume. Most telesales careers don’t pay huge commissions per sale it is the volume that brings in the bucks. That is why being a good manager of your time is key, every minute of your day counts, time is money. Organize your day so that you can be most productive. Allocate your day into different sections. For example in the morning you can outbound call new prospects, in the afternoon you can call back existing customers. Whatever way you structure your day make sure that it is maximizing your ability to succeed.
4 – Keep a Professional Distance
While it is important to be friendly you need to remember that you are not there to socialize with the customer, they have a need and you are there to fill that need with your product. Too many telesales agents think that by talking about extraneous things such as the weather, their kids, or their hobbies that their customer will be more likely to buy from them. Far from making the customer want to buy it takes the customer further off track and makes the task of getting a sale that much more difficult. A friendly but professional tone is necessary to let your customers know that you are there to help them, not hang out with them.
5 – Don’t be afraid to ask for the sale
Too many times a telesales agent will give their spiel and after a great conversation they start to lose their ground as if unsure what to do next. When your customer is warmed up and ready to buy don’t be afraid to close the deal. This doesn’t mean you have to say “Do you want to buy today” you can be more subtle. “Why don’t I email you the application” or “How many units do you need?” tell your customer it’s time to buy.
A career in telesales can be very rewarding both professionally and financially. It takes hard work, persistence and skill. By following these five tips you can ensure that your voice will be your best selling tool and lead you to telesales success.
