We all know there is no fountain of youth, and that we cannot actually turn back the hands of time What we can do, is make changes that will help us look and feel much younger than we really are. Here are five things you can do that will decrease your real age.
1. Reduce stress
Worry and stress, especially when it is related to fiances is a very damaging form of stress. Lets face it, if you are dealing with eviction or foreclosure, or having utilities cut off, there is not much to smile about. According to Dr West Conner, If you can find ways to remove general and financial stress you will lower your real age about 8 years.
This is number 6 on Dr. Conner’s list of 20 ways to decrease real age. He suggests relaxing and deep breathing, or taking a walk and calling loved ones from your cell phone.
2. Exercise your mind
There is an old saying, that if you free your mind, you behind will follow. My spin on this is, If you exercise your mind the rest of your body will follow. Studies indicate that mind games, like puzzles, and word games may help prevent or delay dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Dr Conner indicates that exercising the mind may decrease your real age by 2 years.(number 10 on his list). One of my favorite games is to see how many new words I can make with the letters from one word. Randomly during the day, I may notice a word in a paper or magazine, and write it down. If I believe I can get 20 words from it, I write the numbers 1 through 20 and do my best to coe as close or supersede my estimate
3. Get enough shut eye
A quick check of Facebook in the wee hours of the night, will verify that menopausal women do not sleep well. Lack of sleep will cause dark circles under the eyes, wrinkles and tired looking pale skin. If you are unable to get the recommended 8 hours a night, rest as much as possible and take naps during the day when possible.
4. Make love often with your spouse
Dr. Conner says that having sex is an excellent way to stay young. And that making love with your spouse at least three times each week, will lower real age between 2 an 8 years, depending on the quality of sex.
Conner indicates that it ii not just the sexual act, but the love involved in the act that counts. I agree, unfortunately in today’s world the focus seems to be on hooking up, and the sex act itself, rather than romance, and love between spouses.
This is my a time favorite. Proverbs 17:22 says that a merry, cheerful, happy heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit will dry the bones. If any one of the first 4 suggestions are beyond your grasp, this one will be difficult.
If you no longer have a spouse to make love to, and or your finances are on decline, you may not be able to get enough sleep or focus to exercise your brain. My personal suggestion is that you find something to laugh about.
When unknown to my family, our water heater was leaking under the floor boards, we found out when the wiring short circuited. Unable to immediately pay an electrician the estimated $1400- $2,000, we spent a a little over a week in a motel.
On two of those nights I was flipping television channels and came across the USA network television show Psych . The antics of the characters had me laughing until I cried. I enjoyed the sap stick humor that was genuine and without profanity and sex. This show became a release for me, and is my favorite TV show at this time.
As you work on the other steps, please find something that you can enjoy that will release tension. Your body will reward you for it. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, laughing will reduce production of cortisol which causes weight gain and laughter will relax blood vessels.
I have been putting these suggestions into action when possible. I must believe they are working, because I have been told that I do not look my real age, (55) in my last selfie, which accompanies this article..
