If you’ve been following the news recently, you’ll probably be aware that the county of Yorkshire UK, was recently voted as the third most desirable place to live and visit, in the entire world. Whether you happen to live in the UK, or if you live abroad, if you’re thinking about a holiday or a well deserved and well earned break, then Yorkshire, specifically North Yorkshire, could be exactly what you’re looking for. A lot of people turn their noses up at the thought of a UK holiday, due to the fact that typically, the weather here in the UK, isn’t always that great. While it is indeed true that generally, the weather here leaves a lot to be desired, a UK holiday still has a number of different merits, and if you can get over the fact that the weather isn’t always that great, and can open your mind and broaden your horizons, you’ll see firsthand, just how beautiful and stunning this part of the country actually is. If we’ve peaked your interests, and you’re perhaps considering visiting, then here are just five things you should try to do in North Yorkshire, to make your stay unforgettable.
Visit the York bird of prey centre – There are a number of different things to do in York, all of which will prove to be extremely enjoyable and productive. If however, you have a particular soft spot for animals, specifically birds, then the York bird of prey centre will surely be an extremely enjoyable day out for you, and your friends and family too for that matter. People actually flock here (pardon the pun) from all parts of the world, and have a fantastic day out in the process. On offer here, you can expect to see a number of birds of prey, including many different species of Owls and Hawks. The owners and the handlers in this centre are also some of the friendliest and accommodating people you could ever wish to meet, and are living breathing examples of true Yorkshire hospitality.
Visit the fishing town of Whitby – Whitby, though only a small town, is one of the most popular destinations in all of Yorkshire. It is famed for being the location in which Bram Stoker wrote his famous book ‘Dracula’, and as a result, Goths find this town especially appealing. Whilst there, you can take a look around the many different shops, purchase some famous Whitby Jet, from the many jewellers on offer here, and even take a boat ride or a fishing trip out to sea. If you do visit Whitby, you simply cannot leave without taking a look around the ancient and historical Whitby Abbey.
Whilst in Whitby, eat fish and chips at the Magpie cafe – As it’s a fishing town, not surprisingly, Whitby is famous for its delicious fish and chips. Though relatively small, Whitby has a number of different restaurants and eateries, all of which are great to be perfectly honest. However, there is one restaurant which is especially popular and especially delicious, and that is the Magpie cafe. This fish and chip restaurant offers both eat in, and take away fish and chips, but we highly recommend that you eat in. There is always a large queue into the cafe, which often leads out of the door, and into the street below, but don’t let that put you off. The restaurant is very large, sitting on three different floors, and it isn’t long before the friendly waiting staff will find you a table. Whilst seated, you can then choose from a variety of different starters, mains, and desserts, most of which are obviously seafood based. Often, the seafood and fish will be purchased from the seafood and fish market, which is literally just across the road from the cafe itself. The fish will be caught and shipped back into the market, where it will then be purchased by the magpie, and other seafood restaurants, so it doesn’t get much fresher than that. The haddock, chips, and mushy peas is simply to die for, but just make sure you’re hungry, as these are Yorkshire portions after all.
Plan your stay around Yorkshire day – Not surprisingly, up in Yorkshire, they take Yorkshire day especially seriously. For that reason, try to plan your stay around Yorkshire day, as the celebrations and festivals on offer there will be like no other you’ll ever have experienced.
Take in the natural beauty of the countryside – Yorkshire is simply one of the most stunning locations in the entire world, evident by the fact it was voted as the third most desirable place to visit. If you enjoy the great outdoors, then North Yorkshire is for you. There is literally miles upon miles of stunning rolling green countryside, with trees, meadows and fields stretching for as far as the eye can see. If you venture a little higher, you can also enjoy the North Yorkshire moors, which are also simply stunning to behold, and as if that wasn’t enough, you can also enjoy a number of coastal regions too, with Filey, Whitby, and Scarborough some of the more popular locations.
