Homemade or pre-packaged, imaginative or not, inexpensive or costly, there are a ton of ideas to choose from when picking out your St. Patrick’s Day party costumes!
First, if you desire to forgo the more timeless St. Patrick’s Day standbys, consider dressing (or even screaming) like a banshee. Much is unknown about this female creature from Irish mythology, so let your imagination run wild. There is a pre-packaged ladies costume from Caufields.com that comes in sizes small, medium and large. It includes a dress, bolero jacket, waist clincher with skirt, choker. An Edwardian wig may be a perfect addition to the costume.
If you’re looking for something unique, scary and over-the-top, check out this banshee mask. (Others are also available on Amazon.com.) It seems to work for either gender. Easily pair it with a plain black shirt and pants, or don a skeleton costume leftover from Halloween. If neither of those ideas tickle your fancy, let your creativity run wild with the rest of the costume! Just note that it’s going to be hard to guzzle your beer or gorge yourself with that salty, succulent corned beef and cabbage through the mask.
Gretel (Bavarian girl)
If you’re a frugal gal looking to use your St. Patty’s Day costume elsewhere, Gretel is a costume choice that also pairs well with Oktoberfest. Get an adult costume with dress and corset belt for under $40 at CostumeCraze.com. The kids version at the same site is just over $20 and includes a dress and apron. You may be able to get the same look by searching through the thrift shops though hurry up! As the saying goes, “the early bird gets the worm”, so don’t expect to find a pot o’ gold (so to speak) at the thrift stores yet on March 15.
A German beer stein or beer mug-shaped purse would be a great accent for the adult costume version.
Hansel (Bavarian boy)
Reminiscent of the yodeling Hans Strusel’s duds in recent Toaster Strudel commercials, Hansel is a fun costume for the young boy or man. It’s also a perfect costume to reuse in the autumn when Oktoberfest comes around. Throw together the look with a pair of dark green shorts, dress shoes, a bow tie, a white long-sleeved button-up shirt, long white socks, a hat and suspenders. An easier route is to check out CostumeCraze.com for a pre-packaged one that includes the hat, shorts and suspenders for under $30. The plus-sized version is here. Currently, the kids version is priced at just over $21.
Men: Walk around with a German beer stein you’ve picked up at Goodwill to complete the costume!
Why not dress up as a Bavarian maiden? In today’s world, she’s pretty much known as Beer Girl. So, if you don’t mind short skirts, tights and busty tops, then this may be the outfit for you. WholesaleHalloween.com has an assortment of beer lass-inspired costumes, some that also come in plus sizes. Many of the same costumes are also available at Costumediscounters.com, where most costumes priced at $20 and above are 15% off.
Guys, why not challenge the status quo and try to squeeze into maiden garb? Photobomb all of your friends’ photos. You’ll definitely be the most talked-about party-goer of the night!
No doubt, most everyone wants to be a St. Patty’s Day leprechaun in search of that pot o’ gold! Costumes are unique for all ages and genders. Dress your baby in a cute top hat and vest. There are sexier leprechaun costumes available for those who dare. BuyCostumes.com even has an inexpensive dog costume up for grabs, too, if you’re dressing up the entire family.
