Instead of braving the summer heat and facing the sun’s glaring rays, stay in and watch TV. Lots of brand-new shows will keep you entertained all summer long, and there are at least five that look well worth watching.
Hot Summer Shows
Tired of all the same old stuff? Turn to brand-new TV. Many networks will offer up new shows, but there are a handful that really stand out above the rest.
“Girl Meets World”: It’s going to feel a little like the 1990s on Disney Channel this summer. That’s where you’ll find “Girl Meets World,” a spin-off of the popular “Boy Meets World.” The series focuses on Riley (played by Rowan Blanchard), who is 12. She’s also the daughter of Cory and Topanga, who grew up together and got married on the parent series. Expect appearances from original cast members Rider Strong, William Daniels, William Russ, Lee Norris and Betsy Randle.
“Mystery Girls”: Tune into ABC Family this summer for “Mystery Girls,” starring Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth. Yes, you read it right: the 90210 besties are reuniting as detectives. Garth plays Charlie, housewife. Spelling is Holly, a former ’90s TV star who still craves the camera’s attention. They witness a crime, and the ball starts rolling from there.
“The Wil Wheaton Project”: If you like scifi, you’re going to like “The Wil Wheaton Project” on Syfy network. Wheaton will host a half-hour series where he discusses his thoughts on sci-fi film, TV, games, pop culture and so on. In short, it’s any geek’s dream.
“Almost Royal”: Are British accents and a hoity-toity attitude enough to make Americans think a brother and sister duo are members of the royal family? Absolutely. You’ll see it on “Almost Royal,” where two actors pretending to be royals will enjoy hi-jinks Stateside. It’s on BBC America, and from the trailers it looks like great fun.
“Rising Star”: If you’ve been waiting for a singing show that’s made for the modern era, “Rising Star” is it. Who needs to make a phone call when you can vote on singers in real time and decide then and there if they should stay or go? Reality TV is going to get with it on “Rising Star,” where home viewers can use an app to vote immediately on contestants they like. Josh Groban will host. Brad Paisley, Ludacris and Ke$ha will form a cross-genre panel of judges to guide voters along.
Summer TV is going to be hot this season, but there are some shows that definitely look worth watching. Stay indoors and tune in — it’s a great way to beat the summer heat.
