What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a medical condition that affects the spine. The backbone assumes a C-shaped curve. Idiopathic scoliosis has no known cause. Medical research is still on going which perhaps will present the root cause of this medical condition. So far, we do not have any certain information regarding its cause.
Who is Vulnerable?
We are all vulnerable to this medical condition. There are a lot of myths regarding scoliosis. It has been said many times that it stems from old age. The fact is, this condition is in no way tied to age. I have also read some reports associating the disease with young age; it’s true that majority of attacks are reported in young kids but that is not the gospel truth of the matter. There are different types of scoliosis which are spread across every age bracket. It is necessary to carry out periodic medical examinations in order to ensure that our bodies are of sound health.
How is it Diagnosed?
The diagnosis can simply be done by observation or physically examining a patient in situations where the patient is severely affected. The curving of the spine can be easily realized by our naked eyes. The medical practitioner in some occasion will only use his or her hand in doing the examination. The recommended method of diagnosis is via an x-ray result. From the picture depicting the spine, the doctor will be able to measure the angle of tilt in degrees. There is a maximum degree of tilt; the curve on our spine must always fall within certain degrees.
How is it treated?
In serious conditions, most of them arising from accidents, surgery is the most used method of treatment. The surgeons will restore the normal curve by joining different bones together. In other cases, especially in children who are still young, a brace is put around the spine to control the shape of the curve as the child grows. Unlike people who are old, children will always grow in height until a certain age, the growth goes symmetrical with the growth of all body organs.
How Do I avoid adverse effects?
Observation of healthy eating is one of the ways to avoid most of the diseases that afflict mankind. Ensure that the young ones eat enough minerals that will strengthen their bones. Food rich in calcium and Vitamin D are the most recommended during growth. Also, we should always make it a habit to perform medical tests with our doctors; doing that, we will be able to prevent most of the diseases on time.
