Entering the healthcare field has it rewards and drawbacks. Every field will have a variation of the two. Occupational Therapy has many benefits and facts that make it an interesting field of study, check out these concerns and see if you recognize any of them.
Staggering Amount of Therapists– “Approximately 117,000 occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are licensed to practice in all states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico .”(1) Occupational therapy is one of the fastest growing fields in the United States today. The need for more OT specialist will outweigh the number of students graduating at any time. It is a field that will continue to growing in population as people are living longer and more realizations about the effects that OT can have on the younger population.
Degree of Treatment– Is used to not only treat immobility issues of the feet and legs but also used to treat the effects of repetitive injuries in sports and the workplace. Those who use any body part over and over may feel relief with OT. It is a great source of relief for those suffering with fibromlygia and other unknown root cause pain and discomfort issues.
Advanced Degree– In order to become an occupational therapist, you will need to complete a master’s degree whereas the Occupational Therapist Assistant will need an associate’s degree. May OT’s will ultimately go on and further their studies to earn a Phd.
Children with Disabilities – A major source of work today is providing children with disabilities treatment in order to maintain and build their abilities in order to enrich their lives. It is equally important to know that this class is one that in past years would not have been considered to benefit from any services. The advances that OT’s have made with the children are clearly evident in their increasing skills not only in the workplace but also their communities.
Mental Health– OT’s have been treating various forms of mental health issues. Their main goal in treating mental health is to ensure that the joys and benefits of daily life is not only achieved but also built upon. “Occupational therapists help people to develop a personally satisfying routine of everyday activities that creates a sense of purpose and enhances the person’s recovery journey.”(2)
Working in a field serving mentally and physically disabled adults and children has given me a unique view to the benefits and rewards that occupational therapists offer on a daily basis. Through articles like this one, many are able to set aside preconceived notions and presumptions about the field.
