We’ve all seen the commercials for miracle products. Amazing weight loss, less wrinkles, more comfortable clothing, and many more. I’ve always been someone who watches infomercials religiously to see what the newest wonder product on the market will be. While some of these products do work, a large percentage of them do not. Over the years, I have tried many As Seen on TV products that looked too good to be true, and actually were. Here are five of the worst As Seen on TV products ever produced and sold to unsuspecting customers.
I am a very light sleeper and something I can’t stand is waking up to a hot pillow. If I wake up, the heat from my pillow will keep me from being able to comfortably fall back asleep. For this reason, I was excited for the Chillow, a pillow that was supposed to stay cold and comfortable through the entire night. Instead of being comfortable this product was extremely hard instead of being soft and durable. While it did initially stay cool, I found when waking up that it was just as hot as any other pillow. This had me converting back to my normal pillows within weeks of purchasing the Chillow.
Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter
This product was a gift for mothers day and is a hanging upside down tomato planter. I was very disappointing with the outcome and quality of this item. When hanging it is said to continuously pull the water down through the soil and provide nutrition to the roots. We found that the water was not draining properly from our plants and was starting to rot the roots. Once we finally did get the flow open and draining correctly, the water drained so fast that the plants then didn’t get enough water and the soil dried too fast. After only two months outside in the elements the cheaply made root containment system cracked in the heat and was thrown away.
The aqua rug is supposed to be a carpet for your shower. It is said to dry immediately, be stain resistant, and can be laid directly over the drain. I found that this product was hazardous after the very first use. The suction cups on the bottom did not stick and both people in my house almost slipped and could have injured themselves for this reason. Another downfall was that they do in fact stain. After washing a muddy pet in the tub the white carpet was permanently tinted a dirty brown. The last thing that was wrong with this item was washability. The commercial stated that the carpet was safe for machine washing, however, ours ended up tearing into four pieces the first time on a gentle wash.
Light Angel Automatic Light
This light was sold as an instant stick, motion activated, LED light that was fit for inside or outside use. The actual light consisted of four tiny LED bulbs inside of a plastic housing case. Within only one week of purchasing, one of the bulbs immediately burnt out and after calling we found that you could not replace just one, you had to buy another new whole light. In the commercial you see the Light Angel lighting up entire driveways, pool areas, and garages, but we found that the actually dim light left us fumbling to find the keyhole on our door. Apart from these downfalls the motion feature is very tricky and easily set off. We would often go check to see why the light had suddenly come on and found nothing each time.
Chop Magic Chopper
The Chop Magic is a small chopper that is supposed to slice, dice, mince, or cube anything in seconds. Since it was reminiscent of a dicer we had at the restaurant I worked at, I felt confident this product would work. The one good thing about this item was the ease of assembly but not much more. The first thing I tried to dice was a soft tomato. Instead of dicing all that I achieved was crushing the tomato and making a mess. After the tomato, I decided to try an onion. The onion would not even go through the chopper. While it looked easy and handy to cooks on TV, this product did not hold up to it’s claims.
After experiencing these failed As Seen on TV products I’ve given up on ordering experimental products. While some of these do work, most do not in my experience. If you’re planning on purchasing an As Seen on TV product, proceed with caution.
