White teeth don’t just make you look younger and better, they can also give you that extra boost of self-confidence and self-esteem that you need to get that new job, or to get the attention of your new love interest. As a model, your appearance is your business card, and white teeth are a must. After trying many teeth-whitening remedies, I’ve summed up some of the best ones that I’ve tried so far. Since the many whitening methods out there can get overwhelming, this overview might help you find one that that fits into your lifestyle.
Affordable Home Remedy
The first teeth-whitening method I ever tried was a homemade concoction. I just mashed up a strawberry with a fork and mixed in 1/2 tsp. of baking soda. I applied this mixture to my teeth and rinsed it off with water after five minutes. After the home treatment, make sure to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste to get rid of the strawberry’s natural sugars. It’s the malic acid in strawberries that whitens teeth. Although this method instantly works, avoid using it more than once a week, because too much acid can be damaging to the enamel of your teeth.
Since you have to brush your teeth twice a day, why not add a little whitening action into your routine? Whitening toothpastes are a dime a dozen in grocery and drug stores. Each one of them promises to erase stains and some even state that you can whiten your teeth up to several shades. Whitening toothpastes range in price, but most are inexpensive. They use polishing agents, abrasives or chemicals to remove surface stains from your teeth. I’ve experimented with most of the available whitening pastes and have yet to find one that blows my mind. However, I’ll continue to use the pastes just because I like to think that they work.
Although I’ve never tried a custom tray made by a dentist, I have fallen victim to the messy over-the-counter, one-size-fits-all whitening trays that promise to brighten your teeth. The trays use a peroxide-bleaching agent and should be worn for a certain period of time each day. Some brands even promise to whiten your teeth up to six shade. I won’t be using this whitening method again anytime soon, because using the trays and the bleaching agent can make quite a mess. I also found that many of the trays are uncomfortable in your mouth.
Although they can be quite pricey, whitening strips did give me the promised results, which can range from anywhere from visible whitening to professional-level whitening. Unlike the trays, the strips adhere to your teeth and are pretty much invisible. I’ve haven’t used the strips that work within hours, but did resort to using the ones that whiten over several weeks. The only thing I found challenging is remembering to use the strips. I would end up forgetting to use the strips several nights, although this didn’t seem to have a detrimental effect on the results.
Professional In-Office Whitening
In an effort to get long-lasting white teeth, I resorted to a professional whitening session, similar to the ones your dentist can provide or the ones you can now find in various areas of the mall. After applying a whitening gel to my teeth, a laser was aimed at my mouth to activate the gel. After a one-hour treatment, my teeth, which were quite white to begin with, were visibly about two shades whiter. For badly discolored teeth this treatment is said to be able to whiten up to eight shades. I don’t think I’ll undergo this costly treatment again, simply because my teeth were already quite white to begin with and because I’d rather spend the money on clothes or shoes instead.
