Square-Enix’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn, has some of the most in-depth character creation options of any MMORPG on the market. They go beyond World of Warcraft staples like skin, eye, and hair color, and include a whole spectrum of tones as well as different character voices, and ways to change facial features and proportions.
Until now, though, there were very limited ways to recustomize your character after you chose their appearance. You could enlist the services of an “aesthetician,” or hair stylist, after completing a quest. But the only way to change anything else was to use the phial of Fantasia, that subscribers got for paying for a single month (beyond the free month).
The problem? You only got a single phial that way. So there was no way to change back if you didn’t like it, or try out new appearances.
FANTASIA OR RIOT
That’s what more than a hundred Final Fantasy XIV players said, when they “liked” a post by that name on the FFXIV forums, petitioning Square-Enix to make the item available for individual purchases. And now, it finally is.
How do you buy Fantasia?
You have to go to the Mog Station, the hub for FFXIV payments, and then click on “optional services.”
How much does Fantasia cost?
As of right now, it’s $10 per phial, with a bulk discount of up to $5 when buying up to 5 phials. You can buy three phials of Fantasia for $28 USD, or five for $45.
Do you have to buy Fantasia using a credit card?
Basically, yes. Square-Enix also accepts payments using its own branded currency, Crysta.
I mean, is there any way to obtain Fantasia in-game?
No, and there never has been; it’s always been tied to a “real money” payment, even when it was a subscription incentive.
Does this mean Final Fantasy XIV is now a cash shop MMO!?
Right now there are only three add-ons available; the World Transfer Services, extra retainers, and phials of Fantasia.
Of the three, only paying for extra retainers grants any in-game benefit, and that only because of the extra storage space and potential for extra ventures. However, Square-Enix has always charged extra for additional “mule” characters, even back in its other subscription MMO, Final Fantasy XI. Each one represents additional server load and storage space allocated.
Is there anything Fantasia doesn’t change?
A few things, including your character’s birth date. The biggest one is that you can’t change your character’s name with Fantasia. Right now, the only way to do so is to buy a world transfer to a server where a character with your character’s name exists, because it will ask you to change your name when you do that.
