The Fantastic Four is coming to the big screen again, but this won’t be the same Fantastic Four that fans remember from the last two movies about Marvel’s First Family. One character received a race change and another will have to have a completely different past. Plus, everyone is young and it looks like the origin story will be changed to the Ultimate Marvel Universe version. According to producer Simon Kinberg, the new “Fantastic Four” movie will be a more realistic, gritty and grounded movie.
With that in mind, here is what fans need to know about the new “Fantastic Four” as well as where the franchise might head in the future.
Changes in The Fantastic Four Origin
There looks to be some major changes in the Fantastic Four since they last appeared on the big screen. That earlier movie saw the team as designed in the classic Marvel Comics. The original team went into outerspace, passed through cosmic rays, and ended up with superhuman powers. The new movie will take the origin from the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics, where Reed Richards causes the incident that gives everyone their powers in a think tank for the brightest minds in the world.
Changing the Characters
With the new origin story, that means that a new cast is on-hand that is much younger, including Miles Teller as Reed, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm. This shows that there is some changes afoot as well when it comes to their characters. The biggest changes are to Johnny, who is now African American instead of white, and Ben Grimm who is no longer the hulking jock he was before the changes.
For Johnny, a lot has been said and the movie can just change him and Sue Storm from blood relatives to step siblings. Regardless, Jordan should be able to nail the cockiness of Johnny Storm. However, Ben Grimm in both the classic and Ultimate worlds was a bug guy, Reed’s only friend who protected him along the way. To change him to the smaller Jamie Bell means to change who he was before he became The Thing.
Silver Surfer / Galactus
With Dr. Doom already the villain in the first movie, with Toby Kebbell cast to play the role, the future is now an exciting thing to look forward to. The biggest idea is that the franchise will try to reintroduce Galactus since the last time they used him, the choices to use a cloud really fell flat. The idea of Galactus is out there since Fox refused to give him and Silver Surfer back to Marvel in exchange for Daredevil in 2012. With Marvel now bringing Daredevil to Netflix, it seems that Fox has plans for Silver Surfer, and with Surfer, Galactus is never far behind.
