As Father’s Day approaches, we turn the spotlight on dads everywhere. We give thanks and show our appreciation to the stand-up men in our lives that show their goodness through their relationships with their children. One type of dad in particular that embodies the spirit of fatherly generosity and warmheartedness is the adoptive dad.
Famous celebrities are among the many men who have chosen the adoption route. Celebrity dads are note-worthy because they can act as advocates for adoption. Speaking about their adoption in public forums puts a spotlight on this important topic and also may encourage others to consider the process themselves. Let’s look at a few celebrity adoptive dads.
Hugh Jackman has been vocal about the fertility struggles that he and his wife have faced trying to have a child of their own. After rounds of in vitro fertilization ended in miscarriages, he and his wife adopted two children, Oscar and Ava. However, he has stated that adoption was not a last resort but always part of their life plan. He described the moment of his adopted son’s birth in an interview with Katie Couric in 2012 saying, “The moment Oscar was born all of the heartache melted away.”
Jackman stars in the movie X-Men: Days of Future Past in theaters now and will host the 2014 Tony Awards on June 8th.
Brad Pitt and his partner, Angelina Jolie, are among the most famous international adoptive parents in the world. Their family includes three adopted children, Maddox, Zahara and Pax, from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam, respectively. Pitt has said of his adopted children, “They’re as much my blood as I am theirs.” He and Jolie also have three biological children.
Pitt recently starred in the acclaimed 12 Years a Slave that won Best Picture at the 2014 Academy Awards and is set to star in the upcoming war drama Fury due out later this year.
Al Roker, the weather anchor on NBC’s The Today Show, is father to an adopted daughter named Courtney. He has written a book of reflections on fatherhood called “Don’t Make Me Stop This Car! Adventures in Fatherhood.” In it, he recalls his foray into first-time fatherhood and the adoption process, calling his daughter “an amazing gift.” He says of his adopted child, “The moment I held Courtney, the first time I held her I felt this instant love…I mean it doesn’t matter, biological, adoptive: that’s your child.”
Among other television and radio endeavors, Roker can be seen weekdays on The Weather Channel from 5:30 to 7 am E.T. on Wakeup with Al.
There are many other famous men (and women) who have adopted children including movie stars, athletes, musicians and writers. American Adoptions lists many of these celebrities along with adoption advocates and famous adopted children.
