Straight out of college, I had high dreams and hopes of finding the perfect job. I had an AA degree in humanities, and I was ready to take on the world. I felt I could finally work my way out of retail and into something new, such as working in a library; however, the job I landed was a Key-Holder Position for the shoe store I had already been working at. Not exactly what I had been looking for, but at least it was something.
The promotion did come with a small raise, but also came more responsibility. Now I would have to supervise employees and listen to customer complaints about everything. Also, deal with anything that went wrong, such as the registers crashing. The best thing that came from the job was the experience I gained. I learned how to receive store orders, as well as how to package and send orders out, which can be important in an office type job like one I am looking for. Also, having some management experience looks good to most employers.
Unfortunately, with every job, there is a downside; some more than others. Only a total of nine people worked there and only four of us had keys to the store, while one of the three of us started working there with only 1-day availability. This made it extremely difficult to get time off when I wanted or needed it. In addition, everyone had my cell phone number and called me whenever they had a problem. Usually I would not mind this, except while I was called a few times while my brother was in surgery. Instead of being able to focus my energy on my brother, I had to deal with some work related things.
Although this was not my anticipated job straight out of college, and definitely not my favorite job, I did learn some important lessons. I gained a lot of new knowledge that I did not have before as to how a retail business operates and some tasks that must be completed in every company, as well as good experience. This job taught me not to jump into things too quickly, but to really think about all my options before making any decisions, and I discovered new things about myself as well.
