The galleries offer styles like Western art, ceramics, oil paintings, bronze sculptures and everything in between. There is something for everyone to love. Most of the galleries are located in the Art District in Old Town. The four-block radius is lined with a vibrant assortment of cutting edge galleries, local shops and eateries.
One of the best ways to experience the galleries is through Scottsdale’s ArtWalk. Coined as “Americas Original ArtWalk’ it has taken place every Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the exception of Thanksgiving, for the past 39 years. The ArtWalk allows visitors to proceed at their own pace, and spend as much time as they’d like at galleries or exhibits that intrigue them. The art district winds through Main Street and Marshall Way, and even the path of the ArtWalk has it’s own unique ambiance, the streets are lined with locally sculpted statues, fountains and courtyards. Visitors get an intimate look at the different galleries and often see live demonstrations and performances by artists. For people who get tired during the walk there are often horse drawn carriage rides offered as well as trolley rides.
A must see gallery in the area is the David Bonner Gallery. It was founded in 2002 by art lovers Christi Bonner Manuelito and Clark David Olson, they came together with the dream of creating a gallery that was “outside of the box” of regular galleries. The dual sided gallery is split, one side featuring contemporary artist and the latter showing traditional art styles. They were also the first galleries to create this concept.
“The way it all started was that I loved contemporary art and Clark loved traditional art. So once we became really good friends and we started educated each other about the artists that we loved, then it kind of grew from there to show that it is possible for you to learn more and more about art and that you can fall in love with both types of art. So that’s what our concept was, its okay to learn and grow from both and have both types of art in your collection,” says Christi Bonner Manuelito.
All of the artists represented in the gallery, have previously been featured and continue to display their works of art in the gallery.
“We try to keep our artists forever, our theme is a whole family of art, so we try to treat our artists like family. We probably rotate the art that is up in the gallery every two to three weeks for shows,” says Clark David Olson.
Olson wants people that visit the gallery to gain a love for art when they visit the gallery.
“We hope that it feeds their soul and that we can get them to love art as much as we love art.”
Art lovers and art first timers alike will find something for everyone with a trip to Scottsdale, Ariz. where art is around every corner.
