Belli Skincare delivers trusted skin care solutions for women who are pregnant or planning, as well as, for new mothers and beyond. Belli pampers and protects your skin from harmful chemicals so you can enjoy beautiful skin and peace of mind. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Christina Mueller, the brand manager of this amazing brand. Here is what she had to say…
(Q) Hello. How are you? Tell me a little more about the Belli brand…
Thanks for this opportunity to share the Belli brand story with you and your readers. My name is Christina Mueller and I’m the Brand Manager for Belli Skincare.
At Belli Skincare we believe a woman should expect beautiful skin and enjoy peace of mind during any stage of her life: pregnancy, motherhood and beyond. We pride ourselves in delivering trusted skincare solutions that pamper and protect without known harmful chemicals.
The average woman uses more than 200 ingredients on her skin each day as part of her cleansing and beauty routine? Topical absorption happens. Some of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream and can potentially affect you and your baby. Many of the ingredients in beauty products are normally safe, but aren’t suitable for use during pregnancy because they have links to birth defects or miscarriage in published medical research. Other skincare ingredients could be harmful if they are absorbed and passed on to a baby through a mother’s breast milk.
(Q) What is your mission? What is the inspiration behind Belli Skincare?
The Belli brand was founded in 2002 by Annette Rubin, a former Estee Lauder executive, and her husband, Dr. Jason Rubin, MD, a family practitioner. Ever mindful about making the safest choices while expecting their first child, Annette found herself faced with a new dilemma. What skincare products would be effective yet safe for use during pregnancy? Pregnant women are very familiar with warnings from their OB/GYNs about which foods and medications to avoid, but surprisingly no one informs them about which skincare ingredients could be potentially harmful to their unborn child through topical absorption.
Annette quickly realized that the market simply had not addressed this important niche concern. Dermatologists had skincare covered, and OB/GYNs had pregnancy covered, yet neither really felt comfortable recommending cosmetic products for the specific skincare concerns that tend to arise during pregnancy. Annette and Jason decided to solve the problem themselves and developed Belli, a teratology screened line of luxurious and effective pregnancy skincare products that not only pamper, but protect women during a magical yet uncertain time of body changes and heightened safety concerns.
(Q) I love the idea that your products are not only paraben free, but do not contain any synthetic chemicals such as artificial dyes and fragrance. You have products for both the body and the face. Currently, what are your most popular products? Tell me a little more about your best sellers…
Correct. All Belli products are allergy tested, free of artificial dyes or fragrances, phthalates and paraben preservatives. Our products are made in the USA and we use BPA-free packaging.
For face, our Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Acne Control Spot Treatment are both very popular since they are both free of salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide, common acne fighting ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy. Many women suffer from acne breakouts while pregnant and aren’t sure what skincare products they can safely use to help keep their skin clear. Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash features lactic acid, an ingredient naturally found in the body that gently exfoliates to leave skin clear and refined without over-drying. Belli Acne Control Spot Treatment contains sulfur to clear acne blemishes and help keep skin clear of new breakouts.
Some other favorites include Belli Healthy Glow Facial Hydrator, a lightweight moisturizer with an antioxidant boost of vitamin C and grape seed that leaves skin feeling refreshed. Belli Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub is an invigorating exfoliator for the face as well as the body. It sweeps away old skin cells to reveal healthy skin and helps prepare skin for the application of other Belli products.
For body, our Elasticity Belly Oil and All Day Moisture Body Lotion are two Belli customer favorites to keep skin supple and help safeguard against the appearance of stretchmarks during pregnancy. The Your Best Baby Bump Duo contains both the Elasticity Belly Oil and All Day Moisture Body Lotion and makes a great gift for any expectant mom.
(Q) Although I don’t have children yet, I definitely intend to get pregnant in the near future. I am curious, how can a mother avoid stretchmarks during pregnancy?
There are many risk factors that determine whether or not a woman will develop stretchmarks. Your personal risk is affected by weight gain, age, heredity and hydration. You can’t control your genes, and controlling weight gain is often easier said than done. You can drink lots of water, and you can use Belli Elasticity Belly Oil each day during pregnancy to help protect against the appearance of stretchmarks. Many fine spas use our Elasticity Belly Oil as a prenatal massage oil. This luxurious blend of pure plant extracts helps maintain the look of smooth, healthy skin with scientifically researched ingredients, including Vitamin E and Gotu Kola, that help prepare skin for stretching without damage. Lavender and sweet almond oil soothe and calm the senses.
At home, we recommend using the Belli Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub in the shower to help exfoliate and prep the skin. After the shower, massage Belli Elasticity Belly Oil into skin morning and night throughout pregnancy. Rubbing in a circular motion, apply to the stomach and don’t forget the breasts, hips, and buttocks, the skin in those areas also undergoes the nine month stretch!
(Q) When a product is ‘teratology screened’ what does that mean?
A teratogen is an agent that disrupts a baby’s development when the mother is exposed to it during pregnancy. Known teratogens include toxic chemicals, alcohol, smoking, certain prescription drugs, and numerous other agents. Teratogens can have effects that range from mild to severe (birth defects, miscarriage), and they are often most dangerous during early pregnancy and with excessive or prolonged exposure.
Simply stated, teratology screened products guard against questionable ingredients. Belli® skincare products for pregnancy are teratology screened.
The teratology screening process begins with a comprehensive search of the published medical literature to see if an ingredient has ever been linked to a birth defect, miscarriage, or other harmful effect during pregnancy. We search through over 16 million medical research articles in over 5,000 international journals, and use this information to exclude ingredients with even remote links to birth defects or other problems with pregnancy. We also research the LACTMED database to avoid ingredients linked to harmful effects during breastfeeding so Belli products may also be used post-pregnancy. Searches are repeated on an ongoing basis to capture all the latest information.
Belli is Picky for a Purpose to give you peace of mind. The ingredients in Belli products are selected based upon an extensive review of published medical studies. Every Belli product is allergy tested, free of artificial dyes or fragrances, phthalates and paraben preservatives. We use BPA-free packaging. Belli products are OB/GYN & Dermatologist Recommended.
(Q) A friend of mine is pregnant at the present time and mentioned to me that she suffers from itchy skin. Why do some mothers have itchy skin during pregnancy, especially at night?
Increased hormones and stretching can result in dry, uncomfortable skin during pregnancy. Many women will experience dry, itchy skin at some point during their pregnancy and it tends to be common over areas where the skin is tightly stretched, such as the abdomen, in later trimesters. Typical dryness can be minimized with the correct skincare routine that includes exfoliation, gentle cleansing and moisturization. Twice weekly, use Belli Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub in the shower to remove dry, dead skin cells and reveal the healthy skin beneath. Wash with Belli Pure & Pampered Body Wash, it won’t strip skin of its natural oils. After the shower, apply Belli All Day Moisture Body Lotion that features hydrating ingredients and chamomile which softens and refreshes.
(Q) One of my girlfriends is pregnant and told me “Sarah, I don’t know what it is, but I am suffering from acne. I never suffered before. I am wondering if this is normal.” I have to ask, is it normal to suffer from acne when pregnant?
Yes, acne during pregnancy is fairly common. Increased hormonal fluctuations are to blame. Most women will experience it in their first trimester and for some it will continue throughout their pregnancy. Most acne-fighting ingredients are contra-indicated during pregnancy because of potential adverse effects to baby. Our Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Acne Control Spot Treatment contain effective alternate ingredients to help manage acne breakouts during pregnancy while providing peace of mind.
(Q) Do you test on animals? What is your stance on animal testing?
No. Belli products are Cruelty-Free and are not tested on animals.
(Q) For all of those mothers (both expecting and non-expecting) reading this interview, what would you like them to know? What is next for the Belli brand?
Belli skincare products are versatile enough to be used by any woman, regardless of whether she is pregnant or not. Although Belli skincare solutions are specially formulated from an ingredient safety and peace of mind perspective to be effective and ideal for use during pregnancy, they are just as appealing to continue using well beyond!
